Mission Statement

The mission of the Friends of CAIC is to support avalanche forecasting and education throughout Colorado. Our vision is to help build the most robust avalanche forecasting operation in the United States and to make avalanche awareness an essential part of the winter backcountry community's daily plan.

About This Cause

Friends of CAIC is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was created to financially support avalanche forecasting and education throughout Colorado. We provide funding for three program areas: forecasting and operations, technology maintenance and improvements, and avalanche education and awareness. Forecasting and Operations Friends of CAIC provides direct funding to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) to support forecasting operations. The CAIC issues daily advisories for the mountain weather and avalanche conditions. It provides public safety information to the large and growing community of backcountry recreationists and works with CDOT to keep roadways safe. It costs the Friends of CAIC just over $54,000 annually to keep a seasonal forecaster in the field. At the onset of the year, Friends of CAIC and the CAIC determine how current, and if possible, new positions will be funded. During the 2021/2021 season, we gave $220,100 to directly support the CAIC’s forecasting operations. Technology The CAIC provides a variety of avalanche safety resources for users such as avalanche and weather forecasts, avalanche accident investigation reports, and observation data. These are disseminated through the CAIC’s website and a mobile application. Last season, the CAIC website had 2,882,948 pageviews from 416,936 unique users. The CAIC mobile application had 1.1 Million views and 22,000 active app users. The Friends of CAIC provide important funding to improve these technology resources and to keep them running strong. Education and Awareness Our avalanche education and awareness work includes the Colorado Snow and Avalanche Workshop, the Colorado Backcountry Avalanche Workshop, Know Before You Go, and our expanded Trailhead Program. The Trailhead Program provides avalanche information and education directly to backcountry users, and aims to foster an inclusive culture of safe, responsible winter recreation within the State of Colorado. Program activities include visiting trailheads, installing avalanche safety signage, and distributing safety brochures.
