Mission Statement
Kids with Vision (KwV) is a RESULT-driven organization committed to promoting ACTION and AWARENESS about the international situation of blindness in children. Avoidable childhood blindness is a function of poverty. Between 50-75% of childhood blindness in the developing world is potentially avoidable. Avoidable blindness includes both treatable and preventable blindness. We at Kids with Vision strive to help keep avoidable childhood blindness, just that: AVOIDABLE
About This Cause
Our objective has been to find [less-fortunate] kids, children that can benefit from ocular intervention and work with the local hospital to provide/sponsor treatment for treatable conditions such as pediatric cataract, squint, glaucoma, Ptosis and other avoidable conditions of the eye. Children with vision problems often do not come forward or arrive late to seek help. We address this issue by staying in regular contact with local people In the community who notify us immediately of children that can benefit. This works well, because, whenever a kid goes back to his/her village after treatment/surgery, and folks notice the change in her/his eyes, they too inquire where and how to seek help; and subsequently, we get another chance to bring smiles to the child and her family. In addition, one of many ways we continue to find children is via organizing FREE Eye-Health camps for children (newborn -18). It only reinforces our conviction in the power of goodness and the triumph of the human spirit when we a see a child smile ear to ear because he can, now, for the first time, see his parents clearly or when a 15 yr old flashes a shy, but confident smile because she no longer feels weird about people staring at her 'wobbly eyes'. And just as importantly a sigh of relief on the parents faces because all they have to contribute is, their unconditional love and support to their child. Human history is filled with examples of ordinary people working together to share knowledge to achieve a greater purpose. Consider Polio: Less than three decades ago, 1000 children were infected by the disease every day in over a 125 countries worldwide. Now, with education and a pro-active approach, this number has declined by 99 percent. It didn’t happen overnight. It took time. How did it happen? It happened because people around the world – people just like YOU – dedicated their time and energy to spreading the word and acting on that knowledge. Avoidable childhood blindness is no different. We may not realize it right away, but a simple act of sharing knowledge with others may result in development of innovative solutions to combat the occurrence of avoidable childhood blindness.
