As she was leading a group of small children on a field trip, a man charged towards them and threatened to take one of the children. Irene put herself between the man and the children, including her own son and daughter, and shouted. With the help of bystanders, she forced the attacker to leave. The children were unhurt and soon recovered – but Irene was shaken and determined to do something to help people, especially children, build the skills and confidence to take charge of their own safety. Irene used her experience as a community organizer, author, and child development expert to bring together other experts in martial arts, education, mental health, child safety, and law enforcement to work on the issue. She encouraged parents and teachers to get involved in the creation of effective programs that make a real difference in preventing violence and abuse and in developing positive relationships to enrich people’s lives. With Founding Board President Ellen Bass, who is also the co-author of The Courage to Heal and Free Your Mind, Irene established Kidpower as a non-profit organization in 1989. The organization evolved into Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International as we responded to the demand for ‘People Safety’ education to protect people of all ages and abilities from bullying, harassment, sexual abuse, abduction, and other emotional and physical violence – and to empower them with skills for taking charge of their own well being. We go by the name “Kidpower” for short, providing education and skills to people who are kids or who used to be kids. Today, Kidpower is a growing international organization. Worldwide, we have served more than 10 million children, teens, and adults, including those with special needs, through our workshops, partnerships, and educational resources. The future will bring more local services; more centers in communities, states, countries all over the world; more books and educational materials; and more chances for Kidpower to impact the lives of people everywhere. WHO WE SERVE Kidpower is for people who are kids – AND for people who used to be kids — in other words, for everybody! We believe that ‘People Safety’ is the same throughout our lives. By People Safety, we mean what individuals can do to take charge of the emotional and physical safety of themselves and others. What changes are some of the problems we might have, some of the places we might be, and some of our abilities. We also prepare parents, teachers, and other caring adults to integrate People Safety skills and concepts in their families, schools, organizations, and workplaces. Young Children — Even very young children can learn to be safe without being frightened. Starting Strong will help lay a strong foundation of safety skills for toddlers and preschoolers. Youth — As kids grow, we need to learn how to balance their increasing independence with their safety. Practicing together helps to build skills in a fun and powerful way. Teens — Give teens the knowledge and skills they need to take charge of their emotional and physical safety. Adults — Learn how to use the power of your voice and body to set boundaries and prevent assaults at home, in the workplace, and in your community. Parents — Adult leadership is essential to keeping kids safe. Learn how to advocate for your children and protect them from bullying, violence, and abuse. Schools — Learn how to integrate ‘People Safety Skills’ and make them an ongoing part of your daily practices and teachings. Seniors — You are never too old to learn how to protect yourself. Knowing a few basic ‘People Safety Skills’ can improve your relationships and increase your quality of life. Organizations — Youth organizations, companies, and camps gain communication and personal safety skills for their staff and for those they serve. Special Needs — Adapted services for people with disabilities focus on what individuals can do rather than what they cannot. Learn how to build safety skills regardless of cognitive or physical ability. Victims of Violence & Prejudice — Homophobia, racism, sexism, and religious-based prejudice can increase risks of harassment, bullying, and other forms of violence.
