Mission Statement

Cinequest fuses innovation with the arts to empower great creations and to connect audiences, youth, artists, and innovators with these creations and with each other—forging community, joy, and our future. Cinequest’s uniqueness, impact, and legacy result from applying this powerful integration of creativity, technology, and community to inspire and transform lives. Cinequest does this through the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival, Cinejoy Virtual Festival, Maverick Studio, Picture The Possibilities (PTP) youth services and our new DEI series Tapestry of Us. Voted Best Festival by USA Today Readers, Cinequest does as much with film and technology as ever while expanding to include additional creative experiences such as virtual and augmented realities, comedy, fashion, writing, poetry, television, dance, live art, and more! "I think the most important thing about Cinequest is it's definitely the first time I've ever come to a festival where my immediate reaction is, 'What do I have to do to be invited back?' and that's not normally my reaction. It's a perfect festival in a glorious place." — Neil Gaiman, Maverick Spirit Award Winner

About This Cause

Founded in 1990 and developed in the Silicon Valley by a dynamic team of technologists and artists, Cinequest has grown into a globally renowned powerhouse of empowerment and impact. "Strength comes from the people involved and how great their passion and skills are. The leaders of Cinequest have both of those. That's why it's been with us for some time and will still be here long into the future." -- Steve Wozniak, Co-Founder, Apple Inc. Cinequest empowers global connectivity between creators, innovators, youth, and audiences. Cinequest has led the world in its showcase and implementation of the innovations that have revolutionized creativity and filmed media. Over 110,000 attend the annual Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival coming from all walks of life, connecting with great art, technology and each other. Over 1100 artists and innovators attend and present work. Cinequest's renowned hospitality makes the festival experience as warm and personal as it is electrifying. The community Cinequest serves is the Silicon Valley, so it programs to the diversity. While originally starting as a “film festival”, Cinequest leadership soon realized the power in bringing together over 100,000 people. What if their experience in attending Cinequest was “unexpectedly enriched” by seeing a local youth ballet perform onstage, “surprised” by a live Shakespeare performance, or “inspired” by artists bringing to life large murals of colorful paint. How could Cinequest evolve thinking about the arts, appreciating creativity, exploring new forms of story-telling, celebrating new young voices that have yet to reach listening ears? Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival (annual event, founded in 1990) Voted Best Film Festival by USA Today Readers, the 32nd edition of the world-renowned and beloved Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival is planned for August of 2023 and will present a celebration and discovery program of cinematic art, story-telling innovation, and media technologies that inspire and empower. Through the richness of the Cinequest program—whether it be through ground-breaking animation, uplifting comedy, life-altering technology, captivating documentaries, or thrilling stories that expand our views—Cinequest continues to serve incredibly diverse audiences. Cinejoy Virtual Festival (launched in 2020, 5 successful Virtual Festivals over the past 3 years) In the current state of the world, it's more important than ever to innovate and find outlets for our artists to engage with each other and audiences. The introduction of the Cinejoy Virtual Festival has allowed us to completely redefine the way we work with filmmakers and our audiences. By creating a platform that offers extraordinary virtual networking opportunities and access to global audiences; we've created an entirely new experience that allows audiences to discover and experience an electrifying and inspiring mix of artistry and a myriad of international films from their own homes. Picture the Possibilities (launched in 2004, 19th year) We feel our commitment to communities of color and encouraging tomorrow's leaders really shines within our Picture the Possibilities (PTP) Global Youth Program. PTP empowers youth with the tools, confidence, and inspiration to create their visions from art to science and then enables those creations to be shared with the world. During PTP City Sessions and Summits, youth are connected with luminaries, both sharing their creations and ideas, empowering each other for a better future. When you look at a person, you may not necessarily be aware of the stories they have inside of them. With PTP, we strive to bring those stories to life. PTP has been collaborating with youth to create a powerful series of short films that showcase painful but real stories of bullying, discrimination, and finding positivity in bad situations. Through PTP, youth develop greater social skills, their self-esteem improves, they have a sense of personal achievement, and they learn from the 7 Powers of Creating that they have the power to change the world. Tapestry of Us (launched in 2022, piloted with a grant from Chan Zuckerberg Initiative) Cinequest recently piloted and successfully launched a new program called, "Tapestry of Us" which uses powerful short films and uplifting conversations to elevate the experience of walking in someone else's shoes while promoting a culture of kindness. Topics explored have included violence against Asians in America, transgender youth, bullying, domestic violence, mental health, and more. In 2023-2024, Cinequest aims to expand this program and make an even greater impact in our communities.
