Mission Statement

Community Music School enriches the lives of students, teachers, professional musicians, and the community through musical education, performance, and appreciation. We have focused on nurturing young musicians since 1992.

About This Cause

Community Music School of Santa Cruz (CMS) was founded in 1992 by recording artist/music teacher Shelley Phillips. CMS was created as a direct response to the defunding of public school music programs that began in the 1990s. A core part of our mission is to engage more students in playing music; this benefits students, parents, music teachers, and musicians, and also expands the audience for all forms of music performance. We believe music can be life-transforming and we’ve seen that transformation repeatedly within our youth programs. Music has the potential to bring something forth that invites you to engage, that ignites a spark within you, and that inspires you to create. Music helps us to find meaning in our lives, connection with each other, and a community where we belong. CMS is committed to providing an entry point for new musicians and their families throughout Santa Cruz County. Programs: Teacher Referrals We run a free information and referral service, putting the public in touch with exemplary music teachers and community music groups offering instruction on a myriad of instruments and styles. By using our online database and clicking on a given instrument, prospective students can shop for teachers to find someone whose approach best matches the students’ needs, and in turn the referral service helps qualified teachers stay in business by providing their listings online at no charge. There are currently over one hundred local music teachers listed in our database. Concert Series Throughout the year, CMS provides educational and affordable concerts to the public that feature local luminaries as well as internationally known performers. Many of these events are inter-generational, highlighting talented young students as well as master musicians. The annual Harp Festival features an all-age ensemble of harp players, along with world-class soloists. Workshops with Visiting Artists Often CMS presents workshops and master classes with touring musicians that perform in our Concert Series. Local students get a rare chance to learn from renowned international players one-on-one. Summer Trad Music Camps Each summer CMS produces traditional music camps for teens and adults. Camps are staffed by teachers and T.A.s specializing in traditional music and instruments. Teens ages 12-17 enjoy a week-long overnight camp. Students learn and perform Celtic, Bluegrass, Scandinavian, and old time tunes in small bands as well as a full orchestra. Evening activities include Scottish and Contra dance classes, and a Friday night ceilidh and bonfire. Redwood Music Camp for adults is a four-day/three-night opportunity for adults to have a total immersion music camp experience. Music Match Through this instrument adoption program we place donated instruments with people and organizations that really need them. Music Match adoption is available for music students of all ages. We accept most small instruments (guitars, flutes, violins, etc) that are in good shape. Instrument Petting Zoos We offer supervised instrument petting zoos at family concerts and community events. Audience members may try out different instruments with the help of the performers and learn first hand how the instruments make music. Recordings We have independently produced several professional recordings that raise money for CMS programs. Our albums feature music from ethnic and folk traditions, including Celtic music, Shape Note singing, and songs of the Shakers. CDs can be found on our website, at local record stores, and at CDBaby.com. Monthly e-Newsletter Information on our concerts, camps and classes is published in a free monthly e-newsletter, which currently has a circulation of 1,000. To sign up, please send an email to info@communitymusicschool.org. We NEVER share our list of emails!
