About This Cause
THE PROBLEM By the time they turn 18, young adults from foster care have already faced challenges that many may never encounter in a lifetime. For a typical Unity Care client, life often begins in an unstable family environment marked by poverty and substance abuse. After entering foster care, they faced new obstacles within an overburdened system–social workers managing caseloads as high as 1:200, frequent moves from one home placement to another, and multiple school transitions in a single year. With little to no support from family, these young adults often experience a profound sense of hopelessness, making it all too easy to fall back into the intergenerational cycle of poverty they grew up in. These youth are our community’s children, and they deserve better. For 31 years and counting, Unity Care has provided comprehensive support and resources to empower youth transitioning out of foster care, equipping them with the tools to build bright and fulfilling futures. OUR SOLUTION MODEL Unity Care utilizes a housing-first approach, prioritizing secure living arrangements–dorm style, shared, or single apartments–as the foundation service for young people during this critical transition. Once stable housing is secured, our case managers conduct thorough assessments to identify clients’ needs and collaborate on personalized success plans. Recognizing the importance of education and employment for lasting success, our team assists clients in obtaining high school diplomas or equivalents and pursuing higher education. Case managers also help youth assess their skills, complete job applications, and find employment. Additional resources–including financial literacy training, transportation assistance, grocery support, and life skills coaching–equip youth for independent adulthood. To address the challenge of building trust, widespread among youth with a background in foster care, our program provides mentorship opportunities that connect clients with supportive individuals who can help expand their personal and professional networks. Our holistic approach addresses these youth's complex obstacles, offering a stable foundation through secure housing, personalized success plans, and vital resources for mental and physical well-being. At Unity Care, we help our clients envision a more promising future and take the necessary steps to achieve it. Together, we can make a lasting impact in the lives of these young people, ensuring they have the opportunities and support they deserve to thrive as independent adults.
