Mission Statement
PYT’s mission is to provide an outstanding theatrical educational experience that develops leadership, emphasizes responsibility and fosters teamwork in a supportive, respectful environment. We successfully use theater performances and classes to help kids develop a strong sense of self-esteem.
About This Cause
PYT is a School of Performing Arts for children. We were founded in 1992. We attract approximately 32,000 audience members annually and 1,300 student participants in our many programs. As demonstrated by our wide array of programs, we reach a broad segment of our community in Silicon Valley and we are making an even greater effort to reach an underserved population with our new “School Play in a Box” after-school program where our goal is to offer financial assistance to low income students. We have also implemented a free ticket program to our Center Stage performances for low income, handicapped and ill children. The primary objective of all of our programs is to continue to bring high quality theatre arts programs and arts education to the young people of our community. Our goal is to undertake an outreach effort to public schools and children in lower socio- economic neighborhoods with our programs. In addition, our plays are drawn from folk tales from around the world thereby celebrating the diversity of our participants. We may in the future perform plays in Spanish if we feel that there is interest among our students, administrators and parents. Thus another goal is to bring cultural enrichment to our students and audience members. We have found that transportation to our rehearsal facility and the time commitment involved in participating in our “Center Stage” musicals has been a problem to many potential students, particularly those of low income. Our goal, by offering this program, is to solve this transportation problem, hence allowing at-risk youth to benefit from the theatrical learning and developmental experience that their more affluent counterparts enjoy in other communities. We have had particular success working with the Castro Elementary School in Mountain View California. It has the highest poverty rate of any public school in Mountain View and 75% of the children come from low-income families who qualify for free or reduced priced lunches and 25% of the parents are native English speakers. We have offered our SPIB program free of charge at Castro and we have provided free tickets for families to attend our recent production of "Cats" at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
