Mission Statement
Our purpose is to build healthier & more just communities by making bicycling safer and more accessible for everyone
About This Cause
Key outcomes we are working to achieve as a result of our programs and initiatives: All people feel safe on bikes in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Bicycling is accepted as a normal part of everyday life. Bicycling is accessible, convenient, and fun. Bicycling is integrated into youth education and the culture of future generations. People utilize bicycling as a core component of a healthy and active lifestyle. Local & regional governments and community leaders look to SVBC for trusted expertise. Bicycling is recognized as a key indicator for quality of life, economic wellbeing, and talent retention for Silicon Valley. Guiding Principles At SVBC, we think how we accomplish our goals is extremely important, and we support our mission, vision, and outcomes with the following principles: Innovation Connection to the community Diversity and Inclusion Collaboration We believe that one simple tool – the humble bicycle – can combat such regional challenges as high transportation and housing costs, growing inequities based on race and income, climate disruption, a lack of physical activity, and growing health problems while making our communities greener and healthier. Contributions will go towards funding advocacy for safer roads and programs like bike education, fix-clinics, and social rides FREE to the community that ensure all people feel safe on bikes. Imagine a community where bicycling is accepted as a normal part of everyday life, where it is accessible, convenient, and fun. Right now is a particularly important time to cement new and more sustainable travel habits. Your contributions drive our mission! Here is a partial list of the projects SVBC has taken on: https://bikesiliconvalley.org/news Biketivist Forums - Conduct monthly forums on topics such as Safe Routes to School, Bikeway Design Best Practices, navigating city plans, and more! https://bikesiliconvalley.org/better-biking/biketivist-forum-series Bike to Wherever Days & Bike Month - Annual region-wide bicycle celebration, thousands of people pledge to ride and hundreds more volunteer to support riders at 100+ Energizer Stations, offering prizes, snacks, and encouraging passing riders. We host dozens of local rides and Bike Month events during May. https://bikesiliconvalley.org/btwd Bike Summit - Annually host the Silicon Valley Bike Summit - a day-long conference that is the region's largest gathering of active transportation leaders. https://bikesiliconvalley.org/events/summit Annual Fundraiser Ride - This is an opportunity to bring our community together and at the same time support SVBC's mission. Hundreds of bicyclists from throughout the Bay Area show their support by donating, fundraising, and riding from 6 miles up to 50+ mile routes. https://bikesiliconvalley.org/events/bike-to-the-future El Camino Real - In the last decade SVBC successfully advocated for getting bike lanes in all proposed bicycle/pedestrian plans for all cities from Daly City to San Jose. We have now launched a campaign to get these plans implemented with the goal of getting green paint on the ground for the entire stretch by 2030. Annually conduct 30+ bike rides in cities and towns across both San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties with close to 1000 riders! City of San Jose: Successfully advocated for AB-645 - A bill that was signed by Governor Newsom in October 2023 after 3 attempts made in the past 6 years! The Bill will get speed safety enforcement cameras in 6 cities including San Jose. This coupled with ongoing infrastructure improvements will significantly help reduce traffic crashes in the city. City of Sunnyvale: Approval of full-time buffered bike lanes and a road diet on Homestead Road. South San Francisco - Participated in a Smart Growth America cohort to plan and implement a pilot project of separated bike lanes on El Camino Real in South San Francisco. City of San Mateo: Successfully advocated against raising speed limits in the City and reducing speed limits in school zones Provided bike valet year-round at 40+ events parking close to 3000 bikes! Wide variety of bike education classes ranging from bike basics, learn to ride, smart cycling to bike repair! Your support for the bike movement and SVBC will help us seize this opportunity to shift Silicon Valley residents out of traffic- and emissions-producing cars and onto two wheels.
