About This Cause

Our City Forest is a San Jose based 501C3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate a green and healthy Silicon Valley by engaging community members in the appreciation, protection, growth and maintenance of our urban ecosystem, especially our urban forest. In the past few years, we have received commendation with the ISA Gold Lead Award, the CA Urban Forestry Council Award, and the Silicon Valley Water Conservation Award. Our City Forest was one of two organizations in the nation to win the 2015 Senator Harkin Award for Community Service. Through Our City Forest, 160,000 volunteers have assisted at thousands of plantings, tree care, and community education projects, positively impacting local neighborhoods and the urban ecosystem. Our valued volunteers participate in weekly tree plantings, community nursery projects, outreach, and educational presentations. Since 1994, Our City Forest’s passionate AmeriCorps teams, together with dedicated community volunteers, have planted upwards of 100,000 free or subsidized 15-gallon shade trees in San José area neighborhood streets, yards, schools, parks, and public facilities. Our City Forest's stewardship training and tracking program has achieved a 93%+ survival rate as a result of the hard work of dedicated volunteers working closely with Our City Forest personnel. Our City Forest strives to increase public awareness of the benefits and needs of a healthy urban ecosystem with our community outreach efforts, educational programs, and volunteerism. In addition to these general volunteer programs, we have an exciting new mutually beneficial model where companies, corporations, organizations, and groups can get involved with Our City Forest to volunteer, team-build, and make a tangible green impact in our local community! Resident Testimonials: -Brian Conroy (Dist. 1): “The tree planting has given our students (Moreland MS) and especially our environmental club a sense of ownership and a sense of responsibility for nature and the environment. Thank you for providing this service to the community.” -Michael Du Bois (Dist. 10): -“Everything was so positive from the young people at the nursery who helped us pick out the tree, to the young lady who planted it. We cannot thank Our City Forest enough for this valuable service. I only wish my lot could accommodate additional trees.”
