Mission Statement

AFRP is dedicated to finding loving homes for dogs, cats and rabbits and to ending the pet overpopulation crisis through innovative, targeted spay neuter programs.

About This Cause

Animal Friends Rescue Project (AFRP) is dedicated to finding good, permanent homes for stray, abandoned and abused companion animals and to eliminating the use of euthanasia as a means of animal control in Monterey County through focused spay/neuter programs. We provide a safety net for the most at risk animals in Monterey County shelters. AFRP finds homes for over 1,200 animals and transports approximately 1,200 dogs to other rescues throughout California and the Northwest each year. Since 1998 AFRP has found loving new homes for over 25,000 animals and transported over 8,000 dogs to safety with other rescues through our Loads of Love Dog Transport Program. AFRP provides low-cost spay/neuter assistance to our community through innovative spay/neuter voucher programs that help stem the tide of unwanted animals entering our shelters. AFRP fills a niche in our community by rescuing the "least adoptable" animals from the shelters, providing medical care needed (including spay/neuter) and behavior training when necessary, and finally, placing the animals in good permanent homes. Our local animal shelters partner with AFRP by calling upon us to rescue animals that do not stand a chance of survival in the shelter. These are typically shy animals, senior animals, underage or unweaned animals, animals in need of minor and major medical attention, and pregnant or nursing animals. We strongly believe that spay/neuter is the answer to our pet overpopulation problem in our county. AFRP envisions a day where all cats and dogs are in loving homes.
