Mission Statement
Power California (PowerCA) harnesses the energy of young voters of color and their families to create a state that is equitable, inclusive and just for everyone who calls California home.
About This Cause
We are a statewide multi-racial civic engagement organization made up of local grassroots youth organizations in rural, urban, and suburban communities. We engage and develop the leadership of young people of color to participate in our democracy, hold systems of government accountable and to ensure our electorate mirrors the rich diversity of California. Our vision for the future is a California where all participate fully in decision-making for a just, safe, and culturally-vibrant state where power truly rests with the people. Those with the least economic, socio-cultural and political power must have an equal say in determining our state’s future. Our long-term investment in building the infrastructure, capacity, and voting power of young people of color through civic engagement contributes to the long-term movement of building power with young people across California. Over the past 5 years we have: registered nearly 100,000 and mobilized 600,000+ young voters expanding the electorate and wielding real political power at the polls; developed the leadership of 7,000+ young leaders and activists building the next generation of leaders; advanced a youth agenda and platform that increase the health, safety, and well-being of young people of color and their families; and led narrative power building reaching 1 million+ young BIPOC annually that continues to shift culture and position young people as valued decision makers. PowerCA plays a critical role as a leading organization within the racial justice and power building ecosystem. PowerCA creates safe growth spaces for political education and youth organizing, building the next generation of leaders that can influence policies, and advance racial, gender, and economic equity. Rooted in social justice and health equity values, PowerCA leadership development, political education, cultural strategy, narrative change, organizing skills and strategy, and civic education are core components of our approach towards building power for bold, systemic reform in California. PowerCA engages young people of color in regions across the state where deep investment in youth of color organizing did not exist, growing our base of young leaders of color and building the political power needed to advance a youth agenda. Our ability to shift narratives, mobilize thousands of young people of color, and successfully build a leadership pipeline of young organizers and leaders of color is a testament to our unique approach to movement-building electoral organizing, leading with culture and values, integrating innovative technology, and centering BIPOC youth. Our core strategies include: ✓ Building a Youth Voting Bloc: Power California with our alliance partners across the state mobilizes over 75,000 young voters annually maximizing the impact and effectiveness of our combined efforts engaging voters, advancing equity and justice for our communities, and shaping policy outcomes on pressing issues. ✓ Growing our Organizing Power: Power California has built youth organizing infrastructure, capacity, and leadership in underrepresented communities across the state (Bay Area, Southern California, and Central Valley) in order to build support for our Youth Agenda and Platform and strengthen regional muscle and infrastructure needed to expand civic power for young people in areas where little youth organizing exists. ✓ Developing the Next Generation of Leaders: Our Organizing builds a base and political home with young BIPOC, addressing the gaps in the youth organizing pipeline and building stronger leadership pathways. Our youth organizing programs; through political education, skill building workshops, community actions and training; build the leadership of young people to develop, organize, and lead local and statewide campaigns for racial justice and equity. ✓ Changing Narrative and Shifting Culture: We use communications, narrative, and cultural strategies to change the way young people of color are valued and positioned as leaders and decision-makers and to change the way young people experience politics and use their civic power to improve their communities. PowerCA fulfills a critical niche in the civic engagement ecosystem. PowerCA mobilizes young people of color and their families around shared priorities for transformative structural changes, centers young people of color in our economy and democracy, and trains youth and young adults in community and electoral organizing, building one of the largest bases of youth leaders across the state. We are making our vision of a state in which there is equitable access to political power a reality.
