Mission Statement
Companions on a Journey Grief Support provides ongoing support for the bereaved – one child, one teen, one adult, one family at a time, surrounding them with HOPE, STRENGTH, and HEALING as they create their new life balance.
About This Cause
For the past 25 years, Companions on a Journey Grief Support (COJ) has been a safe haven for bereaved children, teens, adults and families, offering services free of charge to all who need them. Together, we offer support and education to more than 5,000 individuals annually, including vulnerable racial and socio-economic populations. More recently, our work has extended to crisis support and bereavement education for first responders, healthcare workers, funeral homes, and other organizations. Our staff members are nationally-recognized facilitators through the American Academy of Bereavement (AAB), the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP), Certified QPR Gatekeeper Instructors (Question, Persuade, Refer) for the prevention of suicide and post-vention, and members of the National Catholic Ministry to Bereaved. We lead support groups for the bereaved including: child loss, spousal loss, parent loss, surviving after suicide, sibling loss, young adult loss, family support, teen grief, and friend grief. Children and teens with unaddressed grief are especially at risk for adverse behavioral and health struggles. In Ohio, it’s estimated that 1 in 10 children and teens will experience the death of a parent or sibling by their 18th birthday. By the time they reach 24, this number doubles. In the counties we serve, currently 18,680 children and 41,940 young adults are bereaved. Sadly, the COVID-19 Pandemic created new barriers to our bereavement service offerings, while also limiting our fundraising opportunities. We’ve been working quickly to adapt to the new virtual environment, and yet are in need of additional funding to support our critical work within the community, especially with regards to our school-based programming for children and teens. At COJ, we have a big, bold vision to create a world where no child, teen, adult, or family grieves alone. During this time of uncertainty, financial hardship, civil and racial unrest, and unprecedented emotional stress, we remain committed to creating a safe space for all individuals regardless of race, religion, gender or background to process their feelings of grief and loss in healthy ways.
