Mission Statement
Our organization Godparents of the Children of Instituto Mundo Libre (IML) supports the efforts of the IML in Lima, Peru, in the rehabilitation, education and reinsertion into society of street kids. We also provide scholarships for technical and professional education to those older kids who have completed the program. Our goal is to help and encourage those kids to become productive citizens and be an example for the younger kids entering the IML. Since 1997 Godparents IML has funded many of the children's educational, wellbeing and comfort needs, such as teachers for remedial classes after school; equipment for their pottery and carpentry workshops; recreational equipment and activities; clothing, shoes, toys and electronics; bedroom furniture and linens. We have also provided Christmas dinners, festivities, and presents for every boy and girl. One godson just finished his Law studies, thanks to our support. We also have 2 chefs, 1 car mechanic, 1 computer and 1 administration technicians.
About This Cause
Godparents IML is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization registered and established in Washington, DC, by a group of concerned citizens from various international organization. Established in 1997 with the mission of directly communicating with each child and getting involved in their education and wellbeing. One of the highlights of our commitment is to remember and help celebrate the children's birthdays and to bring them joy for Christmas by sending them cards and gifts. the social workers and psychologists working with the IML have attested that having a "godparent" has proven to be a positive reinforcement and incentive for the children. It has also encourage the kids to remain and to enter the IML for rehabilitation. Since the IML focuses its mission on children from 8 to 18 years of age, we have identified the need to provide education and training to those kids who have already "graduated" from the IML. Therefore, since 2010 through our program "Beyond IML," now renamed the "Marita Fuller Scholarship Fund - Godparents IML" we are enrolling these young men and women in professional and occupational schools to learn a skill and get the appropriate certifications to obtain jobs and become productive citizens. These scholarships are funded through the generous support of donors and fundraising activities.
