About This Cause
Almost everyone knows a teenager who wrestles with the effects of abuse, neglect, addiction, life-altering trauma, or who’s trying to discover how to experience fulfillment and meaning in life. CLEFT brings people together to liberate possibility for every student, and deliver life changing support and resources to teachers, coaches, parents, churches, organizations and communities. The future health of our families, workplaces, and communities’ hinges on how well we care for, develop, and prepare our young people. CLEFT is a local strategy designed to positively impact every student, on every campus, in every community. CLEFT mobilizes and networks schools, sports teams, churches, non-profits, and communities to collectively impact every middle and high school student. Many teenagers must often overcome the significant effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences in order to reach their full potential. Creating ways for students to experience healthy relationships with caring adults has been shown to significantly and positively change the outcome for students who may have otherwise never had the opportunity to thrive (National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Violence Prevention 2020). In addition, many students are not able to “acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions” (The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL 2015). CLEFT works hand in hand with schools, organizations, and communities to build a custom strategy including mentoring, teaching for the classroom and sports teams, and collaboration for developing alternative experiences for students. CLEFT local staff assumes an active role in forging strategic alliances connecting communities with schools and partners with administrators, educators, and students in implementing a prevention curriculum program designed to improve the Social Emotional Learning skills of middle and high school students that can be integrated into Positive Behavior Intervention Supports. Every community could experience the dramatic wave of positive impact if every student had a caring, investing adult in their life and access to the tools and resources needed to grow, learn, and thrive. CLEFT is an opportunity for communities to become proactive in building the positive change we want tomorrow by investing in the life of a teenager today.
