About This Cause

Mission: "My Voice Music is a nonprofit organization based in Portland Oregon that engages marginalized youth in music and performance in order to promote self-esteem, social skills and emotional expression." Objectives: The organization's primary objectives are; to provide under-served youth with positive experiences in music; to promote social, expressive and academic skills; and to develop long term relationships via music mentorship that are transformative and empowering. In order to accomplish these objectives, My Voice Music creates partnerships with local schools, treatment centers, and community and state organizations in order to provide quality music programs to under-served youth. Vision Statement: My Voice Music will provide under-served youth with experiences in music that are engaging, relevant, and challenging in order to promote social, emotional and academic skills. Anchored on a belief in the power of music, relationship and story, we will be guided by thoughtful resource stewardship and a deep commitment to education through experience. Values Statement: C ommunity: We believe that being a part of, and contributing something positive to, our community is transformative and empowering. R elationship: We believe that positive, long-term relationships provide guidance and create a concept of social accountability. E ducation: We believe that when education is paired with a desire for knowledge it creates rich and fulfilled lives that positively affect individuals, as well as, the community at large. A rt: We believe in the ability of the arts to inspire and connect with individuals, and that arts education has the power to equip them with tools for learning. T rust: We believe successful relationships are built on a foundation of trust. We are committed to maintaining a level of professionalism and transparency that fosters trust in all of our relationships. E xperience: We believe experiences that are engaging, relevant, and challenging can connect with individuals in a unique way and teach skills that can be used for a lifetime. Goals: Are immediate goals are to work with 350 youth in 2011 providing three tiers of programs; outreach "partnership" programs at schools and treatment centers; independent group programs at our own facility; mentorship programs designed to create long term positive relationships between adult musicians and youth. Our five year goals are to; Reach more youth; Increase Revenue; offer more types of programs to more diverse sets of individuals and organizations. Below is a description of what that looks like specifically. Expand Service Reach Currently we are operating at our maximum capacity. In our first year of operating programs we served over 150 youth while running two year round programs, seven individual music camps, and one outreach event. We have had to turn down several solicitations from service providers, and individuals, for our programs due to a lack of resources. Our decision to expand the services is based on demand from the community. It will also create revenue growth from fee's brought in from these programs. 1. Continue Existing Programs: We plan to continue to work with and develop our partner relationship with; p:ear, Christie Care, Albertina Kerr Centers, Friends of The Children, The Morrison Center and Miller Education East's Connect Program. Some are fee based, others are offered for free. All our dear to our mission. 2. Develop Independent Programs: Private Referral Music Camps: Music programs that use the same eight week program curriculum that is used in our partnership programs. Instead of MVM going to a service provider with a group of youth, we will facilitate groups of youths comprised of individual referrals from therapists, DHS caseworkers, foster care families, private families, etc. Mentorship/Drop In Programs: This program is designed in order to provide opportunities for long-term relationships to be established between the youth we serve and My Voice Music's programs, staff (future staff), and volunteers. This will be a weekly drop-in program where youth from any of our previous programs and the local community can come in order to receive individual-style lessons, participate in group jams, recording sessions, and attend outings to concerts and other related activities. 3. Expand Fee Based Programs: Music programs tailored to specific schools, mental health treatment centers, juvenile facilities, etc. These programs will use MVM's eight week program curriculum. Continue To Develop A Diverse Revenue Stream 1. Cultivate Fee Based Programs i. Continue to develop our fee based program partners through word of mouth methods at school districts, treatment centers and other youth service providers. ii. Develop "private referral" programs that are fee/scholarship based and can accept individual youth from various settings, private home, private therapist, DHS offices, foster homes, etc... 2. Recruit New Board Members With Strategic Ties To Our Community And Professional Skills i. We currently have seven individuals serving on our board. We would like to increase this number up to fifteen if we are able to find appropriate candidates. 3.Grassroots Fundraising/Outreach Events i. Our Executive Director and each board member have committed to host private friends and family events throughout the year with the goals of: a. Growing My Voice Music's community b. Raising funds c. Cultivating long term donors and possible board members 4. Public Charity Events i. Continue to host one large public event and assess whether an additional event is appropriate ii. Continue to develop corporate relationships in order to become the beneficiary of already existing events such as: sport tournaments; employee giving campaigns; percent of bar/restaurant nightly proceeds. 5. Foundation Support i. Continue to write grants to support our free programs ii. Begin writing grants for Bridge funding, a van, and possible temporary professional consultation that will help us achieve our mission 6. Social Network Fundraising i. Continue to use Facebook as a means to stay in touch with our community and raise money. ii. Look into using Recruit Help 1. Recruit full/part time Program Volunteer: Contact organizations such as; americore, links, college interns, ect. This volunteer will be responsible for assisting in and running programs, managing other program volunteers and other program related jobs. 2. Contract with individuals to be temporary Program Directors: Hire individuals to run specific programs that our director is unable to run due to time constraints. These individuals would be recruited from our volunteer pool as well, positions would be advertised to the public.
