Mission Statement

The Mission of Village Keepers, Inc. is to establish and coordinate a holistic network of Black nonprofit organizaitons, businesses, individuals and allies dedicated to ensuring the safety, health, education, emotional and economic stabiity of Black families impacted by poverty and systemic racism.

About This Cause

The population of Black America is 46, 800 million which is 14% of the U.S. population of 331 million people. According to the 2020 Census, 2019 Pew Research Center, Center for Disease Control and American Medical Association 18.8% of Black Americans live below the poverty line and 36% of households are led by single parents (mothers - 32% and fathers - 6%). Black Americans have the highest unemployment rate (6%) in the country. The national incarceration rate for Black adults and young adult males is 33% and the school suspension rate across the country is 63%. Black Americans have a 20% higher rate of chronic illness than all other races or ethnic groups. The rate of the COVID Virus is 30% higher in the Black community than the general population. Village Keepers, Inc. is committed to mobilizing the Black community and its' allies to reduce these systemic inequities. The goals of Village Keepers are to: 1) provide essential services to support family stability and prosperity, 2) provide education for community organization and empowerment, and 3) collaborate with individuals, churches, civic groups, businesses, and government agencies that promote the well-being of Black families and communities. Essential services include emergency food, clothing, shelter, and transportation; parenting education; a Family Support Network that serves two parent homes, single parents, and those with at-risk youth and children with special needs. A Family Wellness Center provides basic medical screening to reduce health disparities and a Rites of Passage life skills training program for youth and adults. Additional services include counseling, academic scholarships, Black History and cultural diversity classes; job preparation & training, record expungement, money management, and business development. These services are provided from a cultural perspective by professionals who have expertise in the service areas listed. All information will be kept confidential in accordance with State/Federal HIPPA Laws that protect client privacy. Community organization and empowerment services are conducted via classes, seminars, and workshops and provide education on social justice and public policy, community safety, civic engagement, family preservation, education and healthcare equity, and resource development. Education and training is conducted in collaboation with the Village Keepers network of providers. Participation in services is open to families and individuals who believe they can benefit from the services listed. Participants can be self-referred and do not have to be involved with county social services or the court system to recieve services. Clients must call to schedule an appointment for services. The hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fees for service are on a sliding scale. Currently, Village Keepers does not recieve State or Federal grants. The organization is supported by donations, volunteers, and local grants. All donations are tax deductible.
