Mission Statement

Justice Outside advances racial justice and equity in the outdoor and environmental movement. We shift resources to, build power with, and center the voices and leadership of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color because the health of current and future generations demands it.

About This Cause

At Justice Outside, we’ve long worked to remove the barriers that have historically prevented Communities of Color from accessing meaningful experiences in nature and professional opportunities in the outdoor sector. We know that participating in outdoor programming offers those who have been most impacted by racial injustice a powerful source of healing and growth. We envision a just world where Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color experience safety, health, and abundant joy through meaningful relationships with one another and the outdoors. Justice Outside has reached an exciting time in our organization’s history. Against a backdrop of increased urgency around racial equity and broad shifts in public consciousness in support of dismantling systemic racism, the need and demand for our work is greater than ever. We are poised to keep growing our capacity building and leadership development work and continue building experiences that will position emerging leaders of color to influence the field at large. Rather than treating the symptoms of structural racism, our work seeks to change the system itself, charting a new liberated path for the movement that places equity and justice at its center. Our work encompasses multiple approaches that all aim toward our ultimate goal: developing a network of communities, individuals, and institutions taking collective action to build a more just and sustainable environmental and outdoor movement. Our work includes three broad strategies, each with its own programs and activities: Grantmaking and capacity building - Through our Liberated Paths Grantmaking program we provide financial support to BIPOC-led organizations supporting visionary and community-driven work in environmental justice, stewardship, and outdoor experiences. We also invest in the success and development of the organizations we partner with through operational capacity building and technical assistance. We use an expansive and intersectional view of environmental work that puts people and communities at the center. We provide workshops to support the effectiveness of our grantee organizations, with training sessions focused on topics such as gaining 501(c)(3) status, fundraising capacity, board recruitment, and strategic planning. Topics are determined by the needs and requests of the grantee cohort. Our grantees are the experts at what they do so we offer general operating grants to continue their work in whatever ways they and their communities need. Grantees are part of a cohort, allowing for networking and collaborative work across the sector by bringing different organizations together on a regular basis with intention and integrity. Career pathway development - Justice Outside builds power with early and mid-career professionals to prepare and support the next generation of visionaries who are leading this work. Our programs engage new and rising Leaders of Color, and leaders from a diversity of identities and backgrounds in the outdoor and environmental field, by connecting them with opportunities and providing a space where they can learn, grow, and challenge themselves and the field at large. Through our Outdoor Educators Institute, we provide technical skills training and social justice curriculum to young adults of Color who would like to work in outdoor education. In our Rising Leaders Fellowship, we provide curriculum and tactical tools to address the racial equity, inclusion, and cultural relevance needs of the field with the next generation of organizational leadership. Through our recruitment and training of entry- to mid-level management staff currently employed in the outdoor/environmental sector, we further the career trajectory and the longevity of People of Color and their allies, while ensuring that as their careers progress they are able to apply a critical racial justice framework at every turn. Organizational training and support - Justice Outside’s trainers coach organizations to assess and change their practices and cultures, helping them to more effectively embody their values of anti-racism. In our training sessions, clients (which includes both environmental and philanthropic organizations) learn to recognize and do away with the ways that systemic racism permeates their work. This includes changing the norms and practices that erase and deprioritize the contributions of People of Color, and preparing individuals and institutions to become agents of change who can create a more racially just outdoor and environmental movement. Training and support ranges from single learning sessions and workshops to multi-year engagements, all with one goal in mind: to deliver critical curriculum and tactical tools for organizations across the spectrum of work to attract, retain, and promote staff of color. Through our training sessions, organizations (predominantly white-led) are able to change policies and shift organizational culture so that People of Color want to join and remain within the environmental sector. The changes we seek are bold, and we know that radical transformation requires radical action. We are working towards systemic change, to build a future that honors the strength, joy, and leadership of Communities of Color.
