About This Cause

History: Chase Kowalski was an amazing son, brother, and friend who was taken from us on 12/14/12 in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. Chase’s heart was filled with love and he touched all of the people that he came into contact. He loved sports of all kinds and had an incredibly competitive spirit. Among Chase's favorite sports were baseball, auto racing, and running. In fact, Chase began running competitively at age 2 in track races. At age 6, Chase asked to be entered into his first triathlon – in his first ever competition, he took on the field and won his age group! Goals: The Kowalski family wanted to capture Chase’s competitive spirit and vitality in creating a charity in his honor with a focus on health and wellness for children and their families. CMAK (Chase Michael Anthony Kowalski) Sandy Hook Memorial Foundation has pursued programs and initiatives that encourage personal improvement, healthy lifestyles and strong family and communities. Programs: The Kowalski family wanted to capture Chase’s competitive spirit and vitality in creating a charity in his honor with a focus on health and wellness for children and their families. CMAK (Chase Michael Anthony Kowalski) Sandy Hook Memorial Foundation has pursued programs and initiatives that encourage personal improvement, healthy lifestyles and strong family and communities. CMAK has targeted three programs inspired by Chase and supported by the Kowalski family; namely, Race4Chase Kid's Triathlon Program, Chase's Place and CMAK Preschool Grant Program. Through these programs, CMAK will focus its energies in an effort to fulfill its mission . Although these three programs will be CMAK's focus, the foundation will also pursue its mission through the inspiring acts of the Race4Chase community and through each and every activity, event or engagement in which we participate. Race4Chase Community: "Chasing Inspiration" By: Valerie Walsh, Race4Chase runner and triathlete Chasing inspiration and you are always in my heart. Racing for you is an honor and you'll be with me from the start. And when I am feeling tired, I remember why I am here, love wins sweet angel, the signs couldn't be more clear. Chase's story has inspired many athletes to honor Chase with their competitions and raise money to support CMAK. CMAK established grass root online fundraising campaigns on FirstGiving to facilitate these efforts. We have many compelling stories that have emanated from these competitions which have been a comfort to the Kowalski family and all CMAK supporters. We have many athletes dedicating their training miles (run, bike, swim) to Chase as we try to accumulate One Million Miles over the next years. We have seen many inactive people turn into road racers due to Chase's inspiration. Many enjoy following our Race4Chase Baton Program, inspired by one of the first Race4Chasers, Kevin Bresnahan, as he completed his first 1000 miles dedicated to Chase. Race4Chase batons are given to inspired athletes to complete an athletic activity (run/walk/bike/swim/other) in Chase’s memory and then pass the baton and instructions off to another to do the same. The Race4Chase community follows the path of the baton and the stories from the athletes that have taken it up. As part of our activities, we organize Race4Chase team participation in athletic events so our supporters can meet and compete together. Race4Chase teams will take part as official charity teams at marathons, triathlons and relays across the country. Through Chase’s inspiration, our Race4Chase community is growing and committed to improving themselves, honoring Chase and the other students and educators taken from us and strengthening families and communities. Join the Race4Chase community, participate in our events, establish your own Race4Chase teams in your local community and enjoy the feeling of doing something worthwhile for yourself and your community.
