Mission Statement

Humane Borders works to prevent deaths in the desert. We do so by maintaining a system of water stations legally approved by land owners and managers. We also maintain the Arizona OpenGIS Initiative for Deceased Migrants.

About This Cause

Humane Borders, motivated by faith and compassion for others, maintains a system of 48 water stations in southern Arizona and also furnishes water in northern Mexico for those in danger of dying of dehydration in the desert. We were established in 2000 as a reaction to the rising number of deaths. Over 3,000 migrant deaths have been recorded in southern Arizona alone since then, but we know there would be even more deaths without our water stations. All of our stations are maintained by volunteers. We respect all laws and our stations are under permit from federal and local agencies. We also pick up trash in the desert. Additionally, in partnership with the Pima County Medical Examiner's office, we maintain the Arizona OpenGIS Initative for Deceased Migrants. This system provides invaluable information for families of the missing, researchers, the media and the public. It is the only systematic data base of migrant deaths along the U.S. Mexico border and not just Pima County but also other counties in Arizona where migrants die. We focus on humanitarian assistance only.
