About This Cause

Planned Parenthood of Montana (PPMT) is the 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization that provides sexual and reproductive health care and education programs. Founded in 1969, Planned Parenthood of Montana has grown from its volunteer-led roots in a small office on Montana Avenue in Billings to a sophisticated health care organization with five health centers and more than 50 highly-skilled, professional staff. From the beginning we have always prided ourselves on what we call the “three legged stool” of Planned Parenthood: health care, education and advocacy. All three legs of the stool are necessary to achieve the positive outcomes of reduced unintended pregnancy and abortion, lower STI and teen pregnancy rates, and healthy babies. Planned Parenthood is a critical part of the safety net that serves low-income and vulnerable Montanans. PPMT serves more than 15,000 patients each year at five health centers, in Billings, Great Falls, Helena and Missoula. Patients pay for services with commercial insurance and Medicaid. Uninsured patients can receive family planning services on a sliding scale, through the Federal Title X program. Planned Parenthood of Montana never turns away patients due to inability to pay. Family Planning: PPMT provides family planning services, including birth control, emergency contraception, STI testing and treatment, treatment for urinary tract infections, HIV testing, cancer screenings and follow up for abnormal results, annual exams, and sports physicals at all health centers. Sterilization through Essure is available in Billings and Helena. Abortion Care: PPMT currently provides abortion services in Billings, Helena and Great Falls. Surgical services are provided in Billings and Helena. Medication abortion services in Billings, Helena and Great Falls. In Great Falls, patients seeking Medication abortion receive that care using telemedicine. This service was begun in 2016, and is provided every other week. Transgender Care: PPMT offers transgender care at the Helena and Billlings health centers. Services include education, hormone therapy and referrals. All of our health centers have staff trained in care for trans patients, even at centers where we do not offer hormones. Care for Incarcerated Montanans: Since, 2015 PPMT has sent a healthcare provider to the Women’s Prison in Billings to provider services for inmates. That model has since expanded to the women’s prison in Deer Lodge and Riverside Correctional facility in Boulder. In February of 2017, PPMT was awarded the contract for health care services at the Cascade County Detention Center in Great Falls. PPMT employs 7 on-site staff to screen inmates upon arrival at the facility, dispense medications, treat non-emergent issues, and transfer care to specialists or the Benefis Emergency Department as needed. PPMT also provides health care education and ACA marketplace education and enrollment service. Our program for incarcerated people follows our Planned Parenthood model of compassionate, non-judgmental care, and allows us to serve a population that is especially vulnerable and at risk for poor reproductive and sexual health outcomes. Because our providers at correctional facilities also work in our health centers, inmates establish a relationship with a trusted provider that can continue upon release. Telemedicine and Online Health Services: In addition to telemedical abortion services in Great Falls, PPMT is scheduled to go live with online health services this fiscal year. We will begin offering birth control visits online, with patients messaging with a provider using a secure platform with a tablet, smartphone or computer and birth control provided via mail, or by sending a prescription to the pharmacy of the patient’s choice. PPMT’s Education and Outreach programs differentiate it from other health care providers. In addition to the education provided to patients as part of their care, PPMT has long conducted education programming in health center communities and beyond. Teen Council: PPMT currently has Teen Councils in Billings, Pryor and Great Falls. The goal of Teen Council is to improve overall attitudes, knowledge, and communications skills among teens and young adults regarding healthy relationships, sexual health, and decision-making. This peer education program’s participants participate in training and use their gained skills and knowledge to give presentations to high school peers. They also become referral sources and leaders in their schools and communities. Native American Outreach Program (NAOP): The Native American Outreach Program (NAOP) has been a PPMT program since 2005. Currently PPMT provides education and outreach to members of the Crow Tribe in Pryor and Lodge Grass. A Native American Outreach Educator delivers the Making Proud Choices curriculum to middle school students. The Educator has started a Teen Council at Pryor for older students. In addition, PPMT educators conduct outreach and tabling at community events and pow-wows. PPMT provides technical assistance and support to tribal health educators at Fort Belknap who use the Making Proud Choices curriculum at Harlem and Hays middle schools. In 2010, PPMT provided training for tribal health educators at Fort Belknap. Currently, PPMT is partnering with the Blackfeet Manpower Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition in Browning and on the Blackfeet reservation to train facilitators of Making Proud Choices. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training: PPMT has provided training for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners in Montana for more than 18 years. The week-long training for health care providers prepares them for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner exams and certifications. Community Education: PPMT educators provide community education to social service agencies and addiction treatment centers through the community education program. PPMT’s experts in sexual and reproductive health education provide HIV, Hepatitis C and other STI/STD presentation education as well as contraceptive information to prevent unintended pregnancies. Contracts include Gateway Recovery Center (Great Falls), Cascade County Youth Detention Center (Great Falls), Passages and Alpha House (Billings), and South Central Treatment Associates (Billings) and various group homes. Unpaid presentations are provided to public education institutions including high schools and universities. ACA Outreach and Enrollment: PPMT is the recipient of a Federal Navigator grant to assist consumers in enrolling in Medicaid and health insurance plans on the exchange. Our Navigators and assisters educate consumers one-on-one and at events on both their coverage options and how to use insurance. The third level of the Planned Parenthood stool, advocacy, serves the duel purposes of defending the right of all Montanans to make personal medical decisions and of ensuring the PPMT has the resources and funding needed to maintain access to the services needed to act on those decisions. Grassroots Organizing: PPMT/PPAMT has the most significant year-round and statewide grassroots organizing program in the state. In the past five years, this program has focused on engaging and training volunteers through constituency specific program, including youth, college students, and clergy. Much of this work, including canvasses, phone banks, and visibility events, is conducted year-round to recruit and train advocates. We engage of all levels of our organization including patients, health center staff, organizational leadership, and the board. We also engage elected leaders, community thought leaders, partner organizations, and donors.
