About This Cause
First Light was established in 2004 as a Child Advocacy Center for the primary purpose to facilitate abused children’s ability to share with a forensic interviewer the abuse put upon them by an older child or adult. The National statistics are painful to read or hear, that one out of three females before the age of 18 experience some degree of sexual abuse and that one out of five males before the age of 18 experiences some degree of sexual abuse. The long term emotional and psychological effects of sexual abuse can be crippling when children are forced to maintain “the secret”. But, when given an opportunity to tell and share the abuse in a supportive, safe and comforting environment; a child’s emotional and psychological healing is significantly improved. A multi-disciplinary team comprised of police officers, child protection workers and a prosecutor watch the interview via short circuit TV and submit their questions through a microphone and an ear piece worn by the forensically trained interviewer so that the child does not need to face a committee of questioners or be interviewed multiple times. The Child Advocacy Center is the entryway into the criminal justice system and therapeutic intervention for an abused child or a child who has witnessed a violent crime. It is essential that Grant County have a child friendly, neutral place where competent children who may have been abused or witnessed abuse can be interviewed by skilled forensic interviews. First Light since opening its doors has served thousands of children and families not only with our forensic interviews, but thousands of children and families have been provided clothing, shoes and necessities at a time in their lives when they were without furnished by our clothing room, we also provide each child with a Pillow Case full of school supplies, personal hygiene items, reading materials, journals, toys, etc. Due to such high demand and the number of child abuses cases, First Light has been able to regionalize services and now includes serving Wabash, Blackford and Miami Counties and courtesy interviews for other counties or States. First Light is DOING its best to strengthen funding thru grant writing, fund-raisers and donations. First Light is a 501(C)(3) organization.
