Mission Statement
The purposes for which Clan Macleay Pipe Band is organized are the education in and the playing of Great Highland bagpipes and drums, the preservation of piping, drumming and other traditions of Scottish, Irish and other Celtic heritage, the encouragement, and the teaching and public performance of bagpipe music at engagements and civic events on a not for profit basis.
About This Cause
Clan Macleay Pipe Band (the “Band”), formed circa 1912, is one of the oldest continuously existing bagpipe bands in North America. It is even the subject of a recently published biography, entitled Clan Band. The Band is based in Portland, Oregon, USA, and has male and female adult members primarily from NW Oregon and SW Washington State. Although the focus, as stated in the Mission Statement, promotes and fosters Scottish, Irish and other Celtic music and heritage, its members are from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, with no such restrictions. The Band has a long history of community involvement. It provides free lessons for pipers and drummers; and it participates in parades and other celebrations, including free concerts for schools, fire and police and other public service departments, and for some community events, such as for various county Parks and Recreation Departments. The Band has also assisted the formation and sustenance of other bagpipe bands through financial support, turning over paying events, as well as member and instructor participation. One such band was a juvenile pipe band, Sir James McDonald Junior Pipe Band, which received early funding and instructors from the Band, and went on to place 3rd in Juvenile Grade 4 competition at the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as 1sts in many other games in Scotland and in games from Canada to California. The Band also participates in a number of Highland Games by competing and providing volunteers, such as stewards and organizers, as well as having been a guest or host band. The Band has competed in Highland games from Nova Scotia to British Columbia in Canada, and from Washington State to California in the U.S. Any income to the Band, other than what has been shared as described, goes only to uniforms, instruments, and other Band support.
