Mission Statement
Save Harlem Now! is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for individual landmark and historic district designations in Harlem, and educates the public about Harlem's built heritage, history, and culture.
About This Cause
Since the New York City Landmarks Law was passed in l965, 149 historic districts and nearly 1,450 individual landmarks, comprising more that 37,000 buildings, have been designated across the City of New York. However, in Harlem, a New York City neighborhood rich in architecture and history, there are only 10 historic districts designated to date, and only 107 individual landmarks. Today, 20% of the built heritage in Harlem is protected, compared with 66% in Greenwich Village, and 50% on the Upper East and West Sides. Founded in 2015, Save Harlem Now! advocates for greatly expanded landmarks protection in Harlem through additional designations, contextual zoning , and safeguarding Harlem's existing historic districts and individual landmarks. Save Harlem Now! is a voice for sound preservation policies in New York City, and educates the community about the neighborhood's built heritage, history, and culture, and the critical importance of historic preservation.
