Mission Statement
Courage MKE fuels a collaborative movement to provide the housing, resources, and services that displaced and homeless LGBTQ youth in Milwaukee need to thrive
About This Cause
founded MKE in 2015 with a mission to fuel a collaborative movement to provide the resources LGBTQ+ youth need to thrive. After their family fostered teens and learned of their struggles. They made it their mission to build something better for our most vulnerable. In 2019 Courage MKE opened Wisconsin’s first home for displaced LGBTQ+ youth ages 12 - 17. Courage MKE believes that in order for youth to work on themselves, they must be able to be themselves. The Courage House is a licensed group home on Milwaukee’s south side. Our Staff, Board and Volunteers are committed to creating an environment in which each resident feels like they are a part of the entire Courage MKE Family. At the Courage House, we assist residents with counseling, life skills, family reunification, and provide them the same experiences every child deserves in a family setting. March 2024 we will be extending our support to begin to support LGBTQ+ young adults 18 - 24 with the opening of our second housing facility, C2 Apartments. All of the youth we serve are part of the social welfare system and are in out of home care for no fault of their own. Our residents have an average of four group homes they were bounced around from before they arrived to The Courage House. The state average for stays in group homes across our state is 34 days. Because of our trauma informed and "family" approach, our average in 2024 was over 200 days. We have had multiple residents stay with us for over a year and this year, we have our first resident that has called the Courage House home for over two years. Our approach starts with educating our communities of the lack of services, treatment, and support this vulnerable population is not receiving. More the 50% of our annual revenue comes from the everyday person who wants to join the movement and change these kids trajectory. We believe that yes, our government should be funding and supporting our kids but we also believe that if we come together as a unified community, we can give these kids the lives every child deserves, full of memories, experiences, and prepared to take the world on, on their own.
