BIO Girls improves the self-esteem of adolescent girls through empowerment of self and service to others.
About This Cause
The mission of BIO Girls is to improve the self-esteem of adolescent girls through empowerment of self and service to others. Our mission is critical as 62% of girls suffer from low self-esteem which is associated with a broad range of mental disorders such as feelings of hopelessness, depression, eating disorders, self-harm/suicide; and social problems, such as high-risk behaviors and violence. Low self-esteem is also directly correlated with suicide, the second leading cause of death for ages 10-24. Rates of suicide continue to increase, especially among girls. From 2007 to 2015 alone, suicide rates doubled among teen girls. And in ND, teens are three times more likely to commit suicide as their national peers. Research shows that self-esteem is highest in girls at age 9 and then plummets to a low at age 12. BIO Girls is working with participants during this vital point of development, before they hit the low point, to provide a 'self-confidence' toolbox that can be accessed as they navigate adolescence to help them maintain a healthy self-esteem. Positive self-esteem is proven to contribute to better health, positive social behavior and decisions, is a predictor of academic success and is tied to job satisfaction in adulthood. Our goal is to improve self-esteem in participants. Independent research is proving that BIO Girls significantly improves the overall quality of life and self-esteem of its participants, 2nd – 6th grade girls.
