Mission Statement

RiseKC is a 501(c)(3) committed to providing African-American men with education and assistance that will guide them into well-paying nursing jobs and other occupations in the health care field. RiseKC is rooted in two simple facts: -There is a nursing shortage in the United States. (Source: American Association of Colleges of Nursing) -The unemployment rate is higher for African-American men than any other group in the United States. (Source: U.S. Department of Labor) The solution is also simple: get black men into nursing jobs. But many hurdles stand in the way of achieving that goal. For those who come from low-income backgrounds, financial setbacks can permanently derail an otherwise promising future. Many aspiring nurses work two, or even three, jobs while putting themselves through school — and still fall behind on rent and utilities. Other talented candidates drop out because a large tax bill hits, or their vehicle breaks down. Still others never apply because they lack the time or ability to navigate the bureaucratic maze of financial and academic requirements. RiseKC identifies black men in the Kansas City area who are struggling with these challenges and eases the financial burden of getting through nursing school. Then we help place them in well-paying jobs that will set them up for success in the profession.

About This Cause

We find African-American men in need of assistance through our contacts at local colleges, universities, and health care providers. To date, we've worked with the Metropolitan Community Colleges, Johnson County Community College, University of Missouri—Kansas City, Donnelly College, and St. Luke’s Health System. Once we've identified candidates, we sit down with them and determine what roadblocks they face and what will help them reach their goals. Our approach is tailored to each specific candidate. Sometimes it's as simple as paying for tuition. Sometimes help is getting a candidate caught up on a car loan so he can drive to class. Sometimes it means settling outstanding tax or legal problems. Sometimes it’s calling school administrators to figure out what grant money, tuition reimbursement, or other benefits are available. The average cost of a two-year nursing program is around $20,000. We work to defray those costs where we can. Once we’ve accepted a candidate for our program, we set short-term and long-term goals to which they are held accountable. We also partner with the Prosperity Center for Financial Opportunity, a local organization housed on the campus of Rockhurst University, to provide candidates with additional education that will help them manage their finances. After graduation, our network of doctors and medical professionals set about placing candidates in good nursing and health care jobs in the Kansas City area. RiseKC is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax deductible. We pay for all administrative expenses privately. Every dollar you give goes directly to our candidates.
