Mission Statement

The Bronx Letters Foundation works to insure that UA Bronx Academy of Letters students and teachers have the tools they need to succeed. Through frequent volunteer work, outreach within our city and tireless fundraising, we are committed to serving the BAL community and its promising students, who have the power to change the world.

About This Cause

The Bronx Letters Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization established to support the UA Bronx Academy of Letters, a public middle and high school located in our nation’s poorest congressional district, the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. Our partnership is a shining example of the possibilities that exist when private, unaffiliated individuals participate in an underserved, public school system. When Bronx Letters opened its doors as a high school in September 2003, its founders were united by a single idea: students who can express themselves clearly in writing will meet with more success in any path they choose in life. Today, its college-preparatory, academic program spans grades six through twelve and is firmly grounded in the core values of vision, integrity, tenacity, compassion, self expression and inquiry. Bronx Letters serves more than 600 students in a neighborhood in which schools are chronically underserved. Over 90% of its students live at or below the poverty level and the majority will be the first in their family to attend college. Literacy rates in the South Bronx are staggeringly low. A mere 6% of Bronx Letter’s sixth graders enter school in September reading on grade level and only 3% enter on grade level in math. Bronx Letters’ curriculum, which includes honors classes, AP courses, and a broad range of electives, many made possible by the Bronx Letters Foundation providing the full compensation for extra professionals, focuses on writing as the fundamental building block of education by offering a host of special programs dedicated to immersing students in an environment that prizes the written word. Writers in Residence support this mission by running workshops, publishing a school newspaper and literary magazine, and coordinating a Writers’ Forum reading series. With only 6% of adults in Mott Haven holding a college diploma, Bronx Letters students need tremendous support on their path toward higher education. College readiness begins early with college visits and overnight trips which accustom students to the idea of living away from home, and continues with SAT prep, essay-writing workshops, demystification of financial aid, and each individual senior being walked through the application process. Our 2018 graduation rate was 85% against a city wide average of 62%. In addition to challenging students academically, Bronx Letters is committed to promoting flexible, self-motivated learning outside the classroom through a variety of extracurricular activities ranging from study abroad programs to Junior Statesmen of America, from sports teams to social justice engagement. Bronx Letters students participate in partnerships with: The Moth, Generation Citizen, Jazz at Lincoln Center, TriLatino, Let’s Get Ready and IntegrateNYC just to name a few. Through this unique partnership, the Bronx Letters Foundation is helping the UA Bronx Academy of Letters to provide a quality education with outstanding extracurricular and enrichment opportunities. We are making a difference on Bronx Letters scholar at a time.
