Mission Statement
SOSMC's mission is to raise funds to lift and renovate the 50-year-old Opportunity School, located in Chennai, India. The school educates and trains underprivileged special needs children to become self-sufficient members of society. The population of special needs children in Chennai is woefully under-served, even more so for children who are born in India’s lower economic strata. The school provides vocational training for ages 3-18, empowering children from all faiths. SOSMC has no overhead and is run 100% with volunteers.
About This Cause
The Opportunity School for Mentally Challenged Children in Chennai, India, is 50 years old. This stellar vocational school with 140 students needs a major renovation. The school is made up of 3 buildings, which have been ravaged by monsoon rains through the years. The buildings often flood, because surrounding buildings have all been replaced through the years at higher elevations, so water drains toward the Opportunity School and floods it. SOSMC (Supporters of the Opportunity School for Mentally Challenged Children) was founded in 2014 to raise funding for the Opportunity School building in India. SOSMC, located in Dallas, Texas, became a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charity in August 2016, registered in the United States. Initially SOSMC intended to raise funds to build a new school. But the costs became prohibitive. Meanwhile it was determined that the foundations of 2 of the three buildings were structurally sound. So the decision was made to lift these buildings and renovate. One building was lifted 5 feet and renovated in 2020, at a total cost of $167,000. The $200,000 required to lift and renovate the second building has been raised. Now $300,000 must be raised to do the same to last building, which is the oldest building and will be more expensive to renovate. This work will enable the school to stay dry during the floods, and the school will be able to continue to operate another 20-30 years. The floods in November 2021 showed that the lifted building stayed dry while the other 2 buildings flooded. Please consider donating.
