Mission Statement

To eliminate cyber and other bullying, of children and teens, through education, legislation, and legal action.

About This Cause

David's Legacy Foundation's (DLF) purpose is to empower students, parents, and educators with knowledge and tools to address and stop cyber and other bullying of minors. DLF believes this is a community issue and that it takes all of us working together to bring back common civility, because we all deserve dignity and respect as human beings in our face-to-face interactions, as well as our online life. Through DLF's education programs we provide presentations to schools and organizations about cyberbullying, the importance of positive digital citizenship, and how each person in a community can make a difference in this pervasive problem. In the 2017-18 school year, DLF presented to over 26,825 youth and adults about cyberbullying, its pervasiveness, dangers, and how to be part of the solution. In addition to presentations, DLF promotes their message through their pledge sticker. The Davidslegacy pledge is a simple but powerful pledge that reads "I pledge to never use my device as a weapon". The pledge sticker features a red texting ellipsis that serves as reminder to slow down and think before you send. These stickers are placed on phones and computers as a reminder of the dangers of cyberbullying. In the 2017-18 school year DLF provided 740,000 complimentary stickers to school districts, schools, organizations, and individuals who wanted to take the pledge. Additionally through their education programs, DLF is piloting student-led initiatives in diverse school districts to address cyberbullying. DLF believes, that who better to implement change than those who are living in it on a day-to-day basis. David's Legacy Foundation believes that legislation is a necessary but small piece to address the cyberbullying of minors. Through the story of David Molak, and other victims, DLF was able to help advocate for Texas legislation to address the cyberbullying of minors. DLF continues to work with school districts on the implementation of the requirements of the legislation as well as gather feedback on how the requirements of the law are working. Lastly, DLF has a legal action arm called the DBM Project, which stands for Don't Bully Me Project but is also the initials of David Bartlett Molak. The DBM Project refers parents of victims of bullying to pro-bono attorneys whose goal is to stop ongoing serious bullying of minors. These attorneys use the civil side of David's Law and other civil remedies to help families in need. DLF provides the funding for court costs, forensic services, and other administrative hard costs. In the 2017-18 school year, DLF referred and helped over 71 Texas families. DLF's long-term goal is to build a model that can be duplicated and shared with other bar associations that would like to start a DBM Project Chapter in their community. Through their education, legislation, and legal action arm efforts, DLF has seen exponential growth and an increased interest from individuals and organizations outside of the state of Texas. Although an infant non-profit, DLF is reaching thousands of kids with their message and believes that kids are ultimately responsible for the culture of their online world. With encouragement from adults, our youth can become change agents who create positive solutions and take responsibility for the culture of their school, their on-line lives, and the world we all live in.
