HAND UP PROJECT

Portland, Oregon, 97217 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower the disenfranchised with the resources needed to improve their lives.

About This Cause

Hand Up Project was established in 2016 and is the only LGBTQ2SIA+ led food assistance program open to the public in Portland. Operating a “shopping style” pantry preserves dignity by offering a choice of food staples. The model caters to the individual’s personal and cultural dietary needs as donations allow, while avoiding food waste from cookie-cutter style food boxes. Traditionally most food programs are run by religious organizations that have judged and ostracized the LGBTQ2SIA+ and BIPOC community. It’s vital to bridge this systemic gap created in healthy food access. Priding ourselves in providing a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere for everyone. We see food as medicine and vital for both mental and physical health. We literally are what we eat. Connecting with our clients over food is a natural way of building community and trust. No one should go hungry. Building on this trust we are able to offer our clients connection to other services with like-minded agencies. We do this with an “It takes a Village” type attitude. Our project comes together with the help of a diverse group of allies. Like our partnerships with Oregon Food Bank and Connect Oregon, a coordinated care network of health and social service providers serving Oregon and SW Washington. Bombus Socks and Save Lives Oregon helping provide services and referral to Transitions Projects for housing. Helping to fulfill our mission to “empower the disenfranchised with the resources needed to improve their lives”. We believe in “Being the change You want to see”, and that's why The People's Pantry welcomes everyone to the table; however, we cater to the BIPOC and LGBTQ2SIA+ community, experiencing higher rates of food insecurities and systemic oppression. We are the only LGBTQ2SIA+ founded and led food pantry open to the public in Portland. Priding ourselves in providing a safe non-judgmental atmosphere, making certain everyone is treated with respect and kindness. Please reference our heat map on our website that shows just how far people are traveling to find a safe space to access food services. Give Us A Hand! Let's Feed the Family!
