Mission Statement
Barefoot College International is a global non-profit organization committed to empowering rural communities through sustainable development and education. Our innovative approach centers on the belief that solutions to rural problems lie within the community, and in empowering rural women. Our programs are multifaceted, focusing on areas such as women's empowerment, education, health, drinking water, and rural handicrafts, all underpinned by our robust environmental commitment. We place special emphasis on solar power, training rural women from around the world, known as 'Solar Mamas', to become solar engineers and bring clean, sustainable power to their communities. We operate in more than 90 countries and have improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals, embodying the power of self-reliance and the knowledge of local communities. Our efforts are aimed at creating environmentally sustainable, self-sufficient communities that are capable of driving their own development, with the vision that every rural individual, regardless of their formal education, can make a significant contribution to their community and the world.

Barefoot College International is an influential non-profit organization, recognized for driving significant progress in 15 out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We ground our work in local partnerships, and decentralized local training centres, implementing initiatives that provide sustainable economic uplift and carve out new educational and vocational opportunities for women and girls from underserved rural communities. We have a worldwide footprint with a broad spectrum of programs such as Solar, Education, Agri Livelihoods, Enriche (a comprehensive women’s empowerment curriculum), Water, and Health. Our unique approach equips rural women to become change-makers in their communities—leaders and entrepreneurs who preserve local traditions, inspire upcoming generations, and pass on essential skills and knowledge. These women become bearers of sustainable, clean energy, capable of building, installing, and maintaining solar lighting systems and solar products. This transition from reliance on fossil fuels drastically improves climate and health outcomes and fosters further economic opportunities for rural women. Our impact is felt globally, fueled by innovative partnerships that spur systemic and policy change. With the support of our generous donors, and the collaboration of national governments, private sector entities, and philanthropic institutions we have now established a network of training centers in locations including Zanzibar, Madagascar, Senegal and Guatemala. These allow us to train more women, closer to their homes, and increase the impact of what we do. We're excited to soon expand our reach with a new center in Fiji. Our tireless efforts have received international recognition, earning us a spot in the Top 20 of the Global Journal's 500 NGO rankings and prestigious awards such as the WISE Prize, the Energy Globe Award and the Humanizing Energy Award from the World Energy Council.
