About This Cause
1 of 5 children today cannot attend school, and 60% of children globally do not meet minimum proficiency levels in mathematics and literacy. The Oppia Foundation aims to solve these problems by vastly expanding access to quality education through the creation and use of our online, personalized learning platform, Oppia. With our open-sourced software, we create engaging and effective lessons to specifically address the needs of low-socioeconomic learners around the world. Through stories, interactive Q&A games, real-life scenarios, localized translations and voiceovers, Oppia's lessons make learning enjoyable and particularly help students who face challenges with reading fluency and lower literacy skills. Students also receive targeted feedback to help them overcome their personal challenges or misconceptions. We distribute our lessons both online through the Play Store and through direct collaborations with local nonprofits in Brazil, sub-Saharan Africa and other regions, and work closely with our partners to overcome any challenges that students face when using them. Our free mobile app also allows students to learn offline using their parents' basic phones, thus improving access to education by supporting learning in households with limited internet connectivity and less conducive study environments. Listed as one of GitHub's most valuable open source repositories, Oppia is a powerful tool that can help learners everywhere gain the skills they need to have a better life.
