Mission Statement

The Shipibo Conibo Center is a nonprofit cultural organization that works to amplify the creative lifeways of the Shipibo Conibo People of the Peruvian Amazon. With a focus on territorial sovereignty and ecological governance, the Shipibo Conibo Center fosters indigenous-led initiatives which demonstrate that indigenous identity does not belong to a bygone era, and that it should be recast into the vision for a technologically-anchored but sustainable future. Working alongside Coshikox— the representative body of the Shipibo-Conibo-Xetebo people— the Center has established a series of legal, educational, and environmental initiatives in the Ucayali, as well as a NYC-based artist residency, exhibition space, and public-programming series. Seeing indigenous self-determination as an avenue towards both sustainability and political transformation, these projects straddle the line between art and activism as they try to build a society where indigenous wisdom and autonomy are a guiding force.
