About This Cause
Woof for Vets is a 501 (c) (3) Corporation, Charter No. N000701322, located in Buffalo, MO 65622, was founded in September 2016. Our purpose is to provide free canines for veterans to assist with leading a successful and productive life by reducing anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, divorce, feelings of betrayal, scared of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), and rising suicide rates. To date, we have placed 196 canines with veterans. Veterans suffering from loneliness or PTSD are in critical need of a companion. A special thank you goes out to the Missouri Pet Breeders who have freely stepped up and provided puppies to veterans, proving that they give the 'gift of life' by reducing suicides. Our Goals: -To serve, help heal, and save veterans’ lives, increase security and calmness. -Promote patriotism, and educate the public on the importance and recognizing and understanding veterans and their needs. -Increase family happiness, communication, and well-being. "Since 2012, suicide rates for active duty service members and veterans have outpaced those of combat deaths in post-9/11conflicts. Approximately 30,177 active duty personnel and veterans of the post-9/11 wars have died by suicide, significantly more than the 7,057 service members killed in post-9/11 war operations. High suicide rates mark the failure of the U.S. government and U.S. society to manage the mental health costs of our current conflicts." Reported by: High Suicide Rates among United States Service Members and Veterans of the Post-9/11 Wars, Thomas Howard Suitt, III1, Boston University, June 21, 2021 The problem exists because veterans returning from war-torn areas overseas with horrendous conditions that cause PTSD need a pet to help diminish the horrors of war, loss of friends, and suicidal thoughts. Veterans who suffer from a pet loss due to an accident are vulnerable when they cannot afford veterinary lifesaving care for their sick or injured dog. Woof for Vets is making a difference in U.S. Military service members' lives throughout Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas, and a concentration of veterans and their families centered around Fort Leonard Wood and Whitman Air Force Base. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have PTSD (post-traumatic c stress disorder). The veteran suicide epidemic averages 18-20 veterans deaths daily nationwide. Psychologists now recognize the calming benefits of owning a dog for emotional support, protection, and service dogs. Service and comfort dogs are essential during the healing process for overly medicated veterans who want to feel safe and protected. Dogs know when they are needed to prevent life-threatening incidents and provide comfort and reassurance. "For veterans, service dogs provide more than just emotional support, especially for people dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Specialized service dogs not only perform specific tasks that help with these conditions, but recent studies show that they can also reduce the amount of medication some veterans require for treatment and alleviate their overall symptoms."
