This includes people experiencing incarceration, youth in detention centers, refugee women and girls, low income public school students, and seniors in housing authorities. Dharma Project is one of Georgia's only yoga nonprofit organizations and have proudly brought yoga and mindfulness to over 600 people.
About This Cause
Yoga is an evidence-based mental health intervention that promotes emotional and physical well-being. We provide tools for self-regulation, stress management, and rehabilitation to reduce recidivism and cultivate resilience. Founded in 2016, Dharma Project now works in three prisons, one youth detention center, a low-income public high school, with refugee women and girls, and seniors at the Decatur Housing Authority. Many people we serve have a history of complex trauma that may have originated from caregiver harm or sustained oppression from institutionalized racism and bias. Research shows that without addressing this trauma, there is a higher risk of recidivism. Dharma Project provides tools and resources for self-rehabilitation and self-regulation. This includes recognizing and reducing aggression and reactivity while supporting recovery from trauma. Additionally, our work provides yoga certification, leadership training and job readiness.
