Our mission is three-fold: To preserve India's great theatrical tradition. To educate,inform and entertain our community via material revolving around social issues and values pertinent to the lives of young people. To strengthen the role of 'Traditional Indian Theatre in the arts community of Chicago area and enhance our national reputations.

About This Cause

Mandi Theater is not-for-profit organization that is served by a group of like-minded enthusiasts of traditional Hindi theatre in the Chicago and northwest suburb area. As a powerful medium for social integration and upliftment, Mandi Theatre aims to use theater to connect with people on various social issues. With its performances, Mandi Theatre’s focus is on using theatre as an effective vehicle to increase awareness of various social issues. We are also dedicated to producing the classics of Indian as well as International literature. A strong focus for Mandi has been the Hindi-speaking senior population which is comprised largely of immigrants that is often starved for artistic experiences. Since it's inception, we have entertained 10,000+ audiences in different age categories. Mandi Theater was among the very first theater group to host Quarantine Theater Festival in 2020. As a response to the global pandemicCOVID-19,this was our initiative to support the'Stay Home'advisory. During this we were able to engage 30 K+ viewers from around the globe. We invited over 18 different theatre groups to showcase their‘ pre-recorded’ plays via Mandi Theater’s LIVE streaming platform,as part of its Culture in Quarantine arts season. The artists who have lent their artistry to Mandi Theatre productions are men and women 20-70 years of age, with a passion for theater. Technical support is generally provided by people who are otherwise employed as IT or engineering professionals. We often invite Illinois based artists, dance teachers and performers to share their work with South Asian community. Our productions have been staged at various prestigious theater festivals across USA. -Audience Demography – Mostly seniors ( 50+ ), Asian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Young generation settled in America. Notable initiatives taken by Mandi Theater • International Women's Day- Celebrating women’s stories and achievements through theater. Initiated in March 2017. Mandi Theater initiated WINGS, an acronym for Women Inspire, Nurture, Give and Support, to invite women to bring their stories of struggle, oppression as well as success in the form of monologs or skits. • Annual Theatre Festival- Bring together theatre groups from across the country to present traditional Indian plays and adaptations. Initiated in 2017. • Theater Festival for the young audience - 1st season in Aug. 2023 Awards won: Illinois Theatre Association's 2020 Award of Excellence for Community Theatre American Association of Community Theater's Spl. recognition award 2022 Won state level contest hosted by Illinois Theater Association - Feb. 2023 Awarded for “Excellent contribution in the field of theatre” by Dr. Gabriela Nick Ilieva, Prof. New York university at 3rd International Hindi Conference in NY.
