About This Cause

RISE PREP’S VISION: Transforming Tomorrow Rise University Preparatory is dedicated to making world class private education more accessible to the underrepresented with a goal of 100% of its scholars to gain acceptance into four-year universities. RISE PREP’S PROGRAM: Prepared for College, Prepared for Life Due of the appalling and ever-widening achievement gap that follows along racial and socioeconomic lines, Rise Prep is passionate about raising young scholars to succeed and lead our future. We enfold our scholars with academic rigor, nurturing support, and Christian love. We’re committed to building character, inspiring wonder, and promoting curiosity so every scholar can grow to full maturity. We are convicted that each person is created and destined to flourish. - Rigorous college-prep curriculum meets state standards - Project-based, hands on learning stimulates deeper understanding - Committed teachers from top universities with years of experience - 9am-5pm comprehensive school day includes homework lab and extracurriculars - Community mentors and tutors staff daily homework lab - Makers’ Lab, STEM learning for all students with industry engineers - Small class sizes mean attention to individual progress, styles, interests RISE PREP’S FACULTY: Devoted and Experienced Our faculty was trained at leading universities including Stanford and Harvard. And all our teachers are highly vetted by past students, co-workers, and families. We’ve spent decades educating San Francisco Bay Area students through public and private schools, and we're firmly dedicated to a school that broadens opportunity in the community we call home. Whereas teacher turnover rates are high in inner-city schools, Rise Prep’s faculty are committed long term, knowing the importance of stability and trust built over time. We are privileged to be surrounded by neighborhood leaders, friends, and advisors who have supported and contributed to our vision. RISE PREP’S STUDENTS: Motivated and Ready We started with a class of 6th graders in 2017-18. That first class graduated this year in 2024 with 100% admission into 4 year universities! We are currently a 9-12 high school. Because of our values for diversity and justice, 80% of our seats are for first generation college bound, low-income, or Bayview/Hunter’s Point residents. Non-Discriminatory Policy: Rise University Preparatory admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin, gender, or sexual orientation, or religious/non-religious affiliation and will treat all students equally as to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. Rise University Preparatory does not discriminate on the basis of these factors in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, financial award programs, or athletic and other school-administered programs. RISE PREP’S COMMUNITY: Together We Rise The Bayview/Hunters Point neighborhood is a socioeconomically and ethnically diverse neighborhood of 35,000 in the southeast corner of San Francisco. It has the highest concentration of youth in the City. And new housing developments that include mixed-income units mean this population will only continue to grow. The Bayview’s rich community history sits alongside significant questions about whether new developments will benefit all. But many members of the community--some of whom have lived here for decades, some of whom are more recent neighbors--are together committed to the common good and a hopeful future for all. We’re glad to be part of this story. Specifically, the educational story. The public schools in San Francisco’s southeastern neighborhoods are uniformly underperforming compared to wealthier northern and western neighborhoods. On the 1 to 10 scale of California’s state ranking system based on academic performance index (10 being the highest), 100% of Bayview/Hunters Point non-charter public schools rate 3 or below--the highest percentage of any neighborhood in San Francisco. Virtually the entire 94124 zip code is designated as lowest-performing based on student residents' test scores. This is the unfortunate effect of long-term, systemic injustice that runs along historically racial, socioeconomic and geographic lines. And yet, because schools form a critical part of the fabric of a well-functioning community, when excellent schools don’t exist in a community: - Young people spend hours on public transportation, impacting family lives. - The long commute negatively impacts participation in after-school activities, parent involvement, time for homework and sleep. - And a critical “third place” in which community members cross paths and build understanding goes missing. Rather than being bussed out of the Bayview, we want young people rooted with us in the neighborhood in common hope for a healthy community. Creating an excellent neighborhood school helps our scholars gain access to higher education so that they can be the leaders to effect positive change and preserve the goodness of the neighborhood, Bay Area, and beyond. We partner with local businesses, churches and organizations to care for our young people. RISE PREP’S CHALLENGE: Time, Talent, Treasure All of us are called to give of our time, talent and treasure to the common good. Will you join us in a commitment to the vulnerable? With long term commitment, stellar teachers, personal care, and the strong support of the community, we can shape the next generation. RISE PREP'S STORY: Rise Prep is founded by members of Redeemer Community Church which has been a part of the Bayview neighborhood for over ten years. The vision grows out of our conviction of a God of justice, love, and reconciliation. After years in public and private education, we've seen the limitations of large, impersonal schools. Rather we've experienced the power of putting relationship back into the classroom. Teaching is not transactional but relational; learning is not mechanical but humanizing.
