Mission Statement
Kids Bike Lane is a non-profit organization that partners with charities, community groups, civic organizations, corporations and individuals to provide bikes for under-served youth in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area with the goal of empowering them to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
About This Cause
Kids Bike Lane (KBL) is a volunteer run charity that raises funds throughout the year in order to purchase bikes and helmets for underserved and at-risk children and youth. We serve youth in three ways. On the first Saturday of December KBL holds its annual Big Bike Build where over 250 volunteers work to assemble the bikes which are then given to charities to distribute for Christmas. Each child that receives a bike also receives a helmet. In 2020 475 bikes and helmets were given away. In the spring and summer KBL offers FREE bike repair clinics where families can bring their bikes to be fixed. Volunteer mechanics fix flats, brakes, gears, etc. in order to be sure the bike is safe to ride. Helmets and donated/used bikes are given away to those that need them. When requested KBL offers corporations the opportunity to have their own team building event where employees work in small groups to assemble bikes that are then given away at the end of the event. KBL provides leadership, tools, the bikes and helmets. The corporation pays for the bikes and helmets as well as making a financial donation to KBL for each participating employee. These funds help KBL purchase bikes for the Christmas Big Bike Build. Throughout the year KBL refurbishes used bikes and then partners with schools and other non profits to give the bikes to youth and adults so they have transportation to school or work. Principals often call to say they have a student that needs a bike in order to get to school on time, or that a parent is no longer able to drive the student to school due to cancer treatments. KBL then provides a bike and helmet to the student enabling them to get to school. Many of the refurbished bikes over the past two years have been donated to charities working with refugees enabling dads to get jobs, kids to have fun and get to school.
