Mission Statement

The mission of STAR is to promote and help establish Health Equity in the Greater La Crosse Community. We do so by removing barriers to physical activity for those of all ages with physical , intellectual or medical challenges that make if difficult for them to the CDC recommended level of physical activity. • To encourage routine physical activity in individuals of all abilities as a means of preventative health and wellness. • To allow individuals of all abilities to enjoy of sport both for recreation and competition. • To allow inclusive recreation activity. (i.e., those with physical challenges and those without playing together) • To encourage camaraderie, sportsmanship, leadership, confidence, a healthy active lifestyle, friendship and fun. • It is hoped that participants will learn skills and lessons about life that they will be able to apply in future employment and as contributing members of our society. We recognize that individuals with physical disabilities frequently have excessive medical expenses and may have limitations in employment opportunities. We recognize that these additional financial burdens may prevent individuals from participating. As an organization we will strive to minimize the financial burden of participants. Our Goals are to help: • Optimize the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. • Minimize secondary health issues due to disability and inactivity. • Decrease health care expenditures. • Educate future professionals in the care of individuals with disabilities. • Eliminate barriers to activity for those with disabilities. • Decrease social services expenditures.

About This Cause

The STAR Center (Sports, Therapeutic and Adaptive Recreation Association) is a volunteer driven community initiative to improve the health and lives of those individuals who have physical, intellectual, visual, hearing or medical challenges to healthy physical activity in traditional recreation and exercise programs. We remove the challenges of lack of adaptive equipment, expert assistance, and instruction in modified exercise. We provide four major programming categories. Para Sports for those with physical disabilities, Adaptive for individuals who have intellectual or motor coordination challenges, Specialized exercise programs for those with specific medical challenges (i.e. Parkinson's Disease, Stroke, MS, chronic orthopeadic and connective tissue disorders) and Inclusive programs which allow individuals of all abilities to recreate together. In February 2025 we open our facility that includes an Adaptive Strength and Conditioning Center. Located at 1011 La Crosse Street , La Crosse, Wi. The Center provides adaptive equipment that allows individuals of all abilities to participate in a strength and conditioning program independently or with a mentor. Para Sports opportunities include: Sled Hockey, Wheelchair Football, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Team Handball, Wheelchair Tennis, Wheelchair Pickle Ball, Wheelchair LaCrosse, wheelchair badminton, Para Track and fields (race chairs and Frame runners) Strength and Conditioning. Adaptive programs include: Fit Kids, Floor Hockey, Indoor Soccer, Pickle Ball, Whiffle Ball, Kickball, Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Track and field, Strength and Conditioning Specialized Exercise include: Rock Steady Boxing, Drummercise, "Can't Stop Me" Parkinson Exercise, Mind Body (Early Dementia), Chair First, Modified Adaptive Adult Group exercise. NeuroFit for those with post Stroke or with other Neurologic issues,Chronic Back, shoulder, hip and knee issues, Fibromyalgia, Connective tissue Disorders and Visual Impairment. Inclusive programs include: Boccia, kayaking, tennis, pickle ball, Strength and conditioning We serve all ages and are co-ed. We are welcoming of all individuals regardless of heritage, religious beliefs or sexual orientation. Veterans participate for free and we provide services regardless of financial status. We partner with the University of Wisconsin, Viterbo University and Western College to give clinical experiences for students and future professional. In conjunction with our education institution we do research on the impact of exercise and recreation on the health and quality of life of individuals with disabilities. Amputation,Balance challenges,Blindness / visual impairment,Cerebral palsy,Congenital limb issues,Connective tissue disorders,Leg length discrepancy, Muscular dystrophy, Multiple sclerosis, Osteogenesis imperfecta, Parkinson’s disease, Post trauma limb dysfunction, Post-stroke challenges, Spinal cord injury, Spina bifida, Visual impairments Neuromuscular dysfunction, Arthritis, early dementia, Autism spectrum,Balance challenges Cognitive impairment, Down syndrome,Learning disability,Low muscle tone,Motor dyspraxia Motor programming challenges,Sensory integration challenges,Traumatic Brain injuries Other congenital syndromes
