Mission Statement
Found in 2016 and based in New Jersey, USA, Healing Words Foundation is a book charity with the goal of providing literacy items to a vulnerable population; ill children. With a focus on pediatric wards and outpatient clinics in developing nations- many with extreme poverty rates-Healing Words Foundation works to implement a literacy safe haven. Our goal is to provide a tool necessary to not online reduce the stress caused by acute and chronic illness, but to use medical centers as hubs for both healing and learning.
About This Cause
Our vision at Healing Words is to administer books to facilities in sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia with the hope of impacting individuals who come from these poverty-stricken/low income areas. We do have a desire to expand globally, reaching facilities across the globe with a need for educational materials. We focus on the pediatric population ages 2-18 and give out books including story books, young adult, and non-fiction books. We also like to engage children in art activities so crayons, coloring books, and construction paper from donors are always appreciated. Books will be used by children who are under admittance in the hospital (and not under infectious disease contact precautions) for the duration of their stay. Those visiting outpatient clinics with their parents/care givers will also have the opportunity to read books located in waiting rooms, with the hopes of engaging care giver and child in the act of reading together. New and used books are gathered in the United States via various avenues including personal donations and book drives. There is also an Amazon Wish List where individuals can purchase books that are then mailed directly to Healing Words. We are eager to place as many books as possible in the hands of young children. No fees are charged to the facilities in which reading material is donated. All we ask is that they have a place for safe keeping of the books and encourage the children to read either alone or with staff and/or volunteers. In an attempt to keep a replenishment of books in facilities we encourage neighboring hospitals we have donated to to exchange books with one another; in a sense creating a library system amongst themselves.
