Mission Statement

Today we hear the news of female infanticides and violent rape cases flood the news on a daily basis, the young girls of rural India are left with little hope, and a meager voice. Many face difficult challenges that leave them in undesirable situations – early childhood marriages, household labor and illegal slavery, and even sex work prevent them from travelling the path of good health, literacy, civic participation, and, perhaps most importantly, happiness. Despite the obstacles they constantly face, they do not fear to dream. They dream of becoming doctors and teachers, of moving to the city (or even abroad!), of changing the world. But these dreams remain just that, dreams. That’s where Suhanee Foundation comes in. Our mission is to materialize the visions these young girls have for their futures by providing them with the support and education they so deserve. We hope that by equipping the female youth of rural India with basic skills and knowledge, we can empower them to become not just

About This Cause

In the summer of 2016, Suhanee Foundation partnered with various committed individuals across North Carolina to raise funds for Antarjyoti Balika Vidyalaya, the only residential school located in Patna, Bihar for visually impaired girls. Antarjyoti Balika Vidyalaya, (AJBV) is a free residential school exclusively for blind girls ranging in ages of 6-18, ran by the Bihar Netraheen Parishad (BNP), in an economically ruined state; Bihar, India. The majority of these young girls were born with visual defects that limits their ability to provide for themselves. Many are left helpless by society and family members. There is no social infrastructure for the blind in Bihar, nor any program offered to these young girls. But with your donations, AJBV can change all of that. The sole purpose of AJBV is to bring these girls into the mainstream and train/teach them to be self-sufficient. When these young girls are forced out by family and society, there is no other alternative than to seek refuge in places unimaginable. We want to offer them a safe haven, free meals, a place to stay until they complete school (10th Grade) and life skills to help them become self-sufficient. At AJBV, they have access to books in Braille, computers, and activities such as art and yoga. They are met constantly with encouragement and to become better at what they do by competing with their peers. It is an environment filled with the innocence of childhood and the optimism of youth. We provide a family environment of communal eating, laughing, music, dancing, a chance to feel secure and whole. Some of which have never experienced. Currently, we are serving 110 students but this number continues to grow. As we expand so does the need to re-evaluate our scope to accommodate the growing number of young girls with visual disabilities. Our fundraising goals which began on January 29, 2016 and plans to run through June 2017, will be to provide all the girls an open door, with an environment where they can realize their full potential. Indeed, to educate a girl is to secure the future. We encourage you to join us in our quest to help these visually disabled children live dignified and fruitful lives – lives filled with love, laughter, and peace. Let us together help them dare to dream and reach attainable goals by donating what you will.
