Mission Statement
Ike Foundation for Autism (IFA) is a non-profit and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) dedicated to serving all persons living with autism in Africa and supporting them to live productive and fulfilling lives, irrespective of age, race, religion, sexual orientation, income levels or gender. IFA was established in 2008, and is registered in Nigeria and Maryland, USA. Our mission is to HEAL autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Nigeria and throughout Africa and enable all persons living with ASD to achieve their full potential and live productive lives. Ike Foundation for Autism (IFA) aims to HEAL (ASD) through dedicated support services in Health, Education, Awareness/Advocacy and Learning; and guided by our core values of Compassion, Inclusiveness, Integrity and Acceptance. Our vision is to eliminate autism stigma in Nigeria/Africa while providing expert services to those living with ASD and their caregivers.
About This Cause
Ike Foundation for Autism thematic areas of focus include support services in Health, Education, Awareness/Advocacy, and Learning. IFA THEMATIC AREAS OF FOCUS Health Services: IFA provides inclusive assessment/diagnosis of ASD and mental health. We have put in place a structure that makes assessment and diagnosis more accessible to persons who may be on the autism spectrum in Nigeria. Education (Early Intervention Centre): IFA operates early intervention center which focuses on intensive one-on-one behavior modification, language enhancement and cognitive/academic development for ASD children between the ages 2-9 years old to prepare them for mainstreaming into regular school system. Awareness & Advocacy: IFA conducts advocacy and awareness campaigns, as well as promoting inclusive autism policy support. Through awareness and advocacy campaigns, including autism walks, workshops and training for stakeholders, the IFA calls attention to autism awareness and acceptance. Learning & Support Services: IFA supports and promotes autism resources that enhance life-long learning activities for persons living with ASD and their service providers. Our physical and online libraries hold vast collections of literature from scholarly articles to parental help books, and other information about autism spectrum disorder. RECENT PROJECTS & PROGRAMMES IFA has created many initiatives for each of our operational pillars, aimed at serving all members of our target community. What follows are just a few of our recent programmes and projects. Kene Series (educational animation series) IFA has created an animated series (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDp7bqRKzxmm6yT7belhT0KTGtIqEHRdt) titled 'Kene'. This educational online animated series is targeted at creating awareness and increasing the knowledge base around autism. It is aimed at the autism community, people seeking information & help with ASD, and the general public. Sexuality & Disability Workshop IFA has also organized several workshops & training exercises, including an impactful workshop on sexuality & disability. This workshop focused on the challenges facing persons living with disability, autism rightsholder groups, caregivers, parents & youths. Autism Resource Center IFA has set up and is running the largest library and resource center in Nigeria dedicated to educating the public about the complexities of autism, creating awareness, improving know-how and reducing stigma towards those living with ASD. This center is targeted at the autism community, people seeking information & help and the general public. Education (Early Intervention Center) IFA operates an Early Intervention Center to provide specialized educational services to children living with autism. At the center, children who are diagnosed with autism receive intensive behavioral therapy by identifying their areas of needs and supporting their individual strengths using evidence-based methods in helping them achieve their full potential. The target audience for this center are children between the age 2-9 that have been assessed and diagnosed with autism. Capacity Building for Parents, Teachers and Doctors (in collaboration with Voice-Oxfam) IFA has successfully organized and carried out Capacity building & training exercises in collaboration with international organizations aimed at providing specialized skills to parents, teachers, specialists and caregivers. Media Campaign & Awareness (with Wazobia FM, Human Rights Radio) IFA has organized and collaborated in many awareness campaigns using the media promote awareness, and sensitize and educate the general public about the issues and challenges facing persons living with autism. This campaign is targeted at people seeking information and help and the general public. IFA Autism Assessment Center (operates in partnership with the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health and the National Hospital) IFA has set up and is running the first Public/Private Partnership (PPP) Autism Assessment Center of its kind in Nigeria, the Ike Foundation for Autism Assessment Center National Hospital. It is situated within the Nigerian National Hospital under a PPP arrangement with the Federal Ministry of Health and National Hospital. It provides free autism assessment services to the autism community & the general public at-large.
