About This Cause
Empowering Futures. Embracing Dreams. Healing Through Community. Dear Black Girl Incorporated (DBGI) is a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the Bronx, New York, committed to uplifting and empowering Black girls and disenfranchised youth through healing-centered, culturally responsive, and community-driven programming. Since our founding, we have worked tirelessly to restore hope, amplify voices, and provide safe spaces for our youth and families to grow emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. We proudly serve over 200 youth and families annually in NYC's most under-resourced communities—particularly those affected by poverty, trauma, racism, gender-based violence, or involvement with the family regulation system (ACS). Our participants range from ages 3 to 60, spanning generations, backgrounds, gender identities, and experiences. We intentionally create intergenerational, inclusive spaces that celebrate Blackness, honor identity, and restore power. Girl Talk – Group Therapy + Community Healing A weekly mental health program offering culturally competent group therapy for Black and Brown girls and young women. Topics include: Anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, Self-love, boundaries, confidence, Imposter syndrome, identity, and belonging. Heal to Hip Hop – Movement for Mental Health A wellness program combining dance, yoga, and self-defense to help participants release trauma, build confidence, and reconnect to joy through their bodies. DefendHer, our self-defense initiative under Heal to Hip Hop, empowers girls and women to reclaim their power with techniques rooted in safety and inner strength. The LITeration Project – Financial Literacy Through Literature Combining reading comprehension and money management using books like The Richest Man in Babylon, we teach practical financial literacy in a fun, engaging way. College & Career Readiness Program Providing one-on-one and group support for high school students and parents navigating the journey to higher education or trade careers. Services include: FAFSA & scholarship support, resume + essay writing workshops, exposure trips to HBCUs and colleges, parent empowerment, and resource navigation. Our Guiding Values: Healing is the foundation. Love is the method. Community is the solution. Equity is the goal. We are proudly supported by: The Pinkerton Foundation, Youth and Families Forward (YFF) Rockefeller Brothers Fund, KD Wellness Fund, Prospect Hill Foundation and grassroots donors like you. We’ve earned a Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency and are deeply committed to financial responsibility, ethical leadership, and community accountability. Every dollar donated helps us provide free therapy, programming, food, transportation, and supplies to our youth and families.
