Mission Statement

Comfort Station activates a historic building with public, community-driven programs that foster vibrant connections at the intersection of art and life.

About This Cause

Founded by a group of volunteer programmers in 2011, Comfort Station operates out of a 1920's-era city-owned building that was originally intended to be a space for travelers to stay warm while waiting for public transportation. That legacy fuels our mission to act as a porous and public gathering space for a variety of communities: our immediate vicinity, a wide range of age groups from children to adults, and the plurality of Chicago’s artistic patrons from traditional genres to emerging experimental and DIY scenes. We believe that precisely this sense of multiplicity defines who we are, why we operate the way we do, and what makes us unique. In 2016 we became an independent nonprofit, with the objective of creating deeper roots for our programming to be sustained in the building for years to come. Annually, our program traditionally presents 10 exhibitions, 40 concerts, 50 film screenings, 25 lectures, and many other community events with a range of partners, such as workshops, readings, and participatory art happenings.
