About This Cause

Our nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization Charity Chess Championship, Inc. was inspired by my son, 10-year old Daniel Mero, as a way to combine his passion for chess with his desire to help others. Charity Chess Championship was formed for the charitable purpose of raising money by holding an annual chess tournament and donating all of the net profits to a charitable organization. The first annual chess tournament was held on Sunday, May 21, 2017 in New York City with 100% of all net proceeds going to Band of Parents, a non-profit organization with the goal of funding new therapies for Neuroblastoma, the most common cancer in children under two years of age. We raised over $20,000 for Neuroblastoma research. The event featured 16 chess Grandmasters playing in a blitz tournament, a tandem Grandmaster Simul (where one Grandmaster played against 30 people at the same time) and a chess tournament for students and adults. In addition, the event will feature a Silent Auction and raffle. Please see our website at www.charitychess.org for more details. Band of Parents is a nonprofit organization founded by the parents of children diagnosed with the pediatric cancer neuroblastoma, and the top funder of neuroblastoma research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). The sad fact is that, due to the high cost of research, pediatric cancer is severely underfunded by both the pharmaceutical industry and the federal government. We are bound by the hope that a cure will be found during our lifetimes. With your generous support, we raised over $20,000 to further the research and drug development desperately needed to save more children, with less toxic treatments. Since its founding in 2007, Band of Parents has pledged more than $6 million to neuroblastoma research. Several treatments funded by Band of Parents are now standard protocols at MSKCC and other cancer centers. Our 2nd Annual tournment will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2018 with 100% of the net proceeds being donated to Mount Sinai Hospital's Ovarian Cancer Translational Research Laboratory, a genomic research program dedicated to uncovering the genetic basis for the early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer. Please see our website at www.charitychess.org for tournament details, to see our sponsors and to get more information about our organization. We can be reached at championship@charitychess.org. Thank you for your support.
