Mission Statement
To provide a comprehensive education to students using Montessori principles from preschool to elementary. To support every child in becoming a peaceful, independent, confident citizen of the world; thoughtful toward others, able to make informed decisions, and self-assured. We will offer this in a non-sectarian setting, amid surroundings designed to support the principles that have made Montessori one of the most effective education systems in the world.
About This Cause
Birchwood Montessori is a small, non-profit school located in the center of the former Franklin Junior High School in Des Moines, Iowa. Our school is nestled at the convergence of three unique Des Moines neighborhoods: Beaverdale, Waveland Park and Merle Hay which offer amenities such as Tower Park, Iowa Food Cooperative, Franklin Avenue Library, and more. Our space within the historic Franklin building offers a beautiful environment of Montessori materials with natural light, a green-space extension of the classroom for outdoor exploration, gymnasium, performing arts auditorium, and many community connections.
