Mission Statement
Vision Quilt empowers communities to create their own solutions to gun violence through the power of art, education and inclusive systemic change efforts.
About This Cause
Vision Quilt works with partners across the U.S. to host programs, workshops, and exhibitions throughout the country, encouraging community conversations that focus on solutions to prevent gun violence. We train partners in our trauma-informed models to help communities build consensus to prevent gun violence and foster safe families, safe neighborhoods, and safe towns. 93% of the people we work with are people of color. We specialize in working with middle school and high school youth by offering schools an extensive curriculum toolkit. Our Values: We stand for nonviolence, equity, compassion and integrity We strive to empower individuals and build resilient, safe communities We believe in the power of art and imagination to create change We believe in fostering collaboration and building coalitions for systemic change About Us: Vision Quilt is a grassroots nonpartisan organization based on partnerships with schools, community-based organizations, and survivors of gun violence. Gun violence is the leading cause of death among children and youth in the United States and a public health crisis. Through art, education, and mental health resources, Vision Quilt addresses the intersections of the systemic causes of gun violence to stop the cycle of violence. Vision Quilt works to find solutions to this tragic, but solvable problem. We work with urban and rural communities focused on serving youth and families who are highly impacted by gun violence. Impact: 92% of participants are more likely to take action to intervene when someone is being bullied or hurt 91% of participants stated their intention to prevent gun violence within their family, school, or community. 95% of participants learned how art, poetry, music and video can impact change Vision Quilt panels have been made by people ages 4-96. Workshops and exhibitions have been held in Oakland, CA; Chicago, IL; Portland, OR; New York, NY; Washington, D.C.; Tucson, AZ; Kansas City, MO; San Jose, CA; San Diego, CA; Los Angeles, CA and virtually. Vision Quilt panels have been showcased in City Halls, museums, schools, universities, community centers, event centers and libraries and also worn in marches and vigils. Vision Quilt panels are also displayed as a “virtual quilt” online at www.visionquilt.org. Our volunteers, staff, and community partners consist of educators, business owners, parents, artists, social workers, art therapists, physicians, journalists, retirees, and gun owners. In fact, our first panels were created by gun owners. We bring years of experience in working with public schools, universities, healthcare systems, nonprofits, and social justice causes to this work.
