Mission Statement

Our mission is simple to inspire students, educate parents. and support teachers. By supporting the entire family and the teacher community. We believe we can dramatically improve the social and emotional health of LD students and ultimately improve their life outcomes while decreasing the costs to society. Specific objectives include: Students - Key skillsets are associated with better life outcomes for those individuals with learning differences. These include confidence, self-advocacy, using adaptive technology, the development of social-emotional skills including anger management and techniques to reduce anxiety. At StandUpLD our goal is to help young people develop these skills with a focus on strength identification Families - The effect of learning disabilities like dyslexia goes well beyond the child. Dyslexia affects the entire family dynamic. Causing strife between siblings, and emotions in parents including denial, shame, and frustration. Parents also commonly feel helpless and daunted as they face a complex educational system that requires the parent to constantly advocate for their child. StandUpLD provides families a common language to talk about LD; community resources and a support system that helps them connect with other families and lessens the sense of isolation. Teachers - Often teachers do not have the training or resources to effectively support students with LD. Our goal is to provide education and support about resources and strategies to best serve their student population. Teachers are often frustrated because they feel like their efforts are having no impact. Through inspirational speakers who have themselves struggled with and successfully overcome challenges just like their students are encountering, teachers see what is possible and are provided the emotional support they need to stay engaged with their students. StandUpLD provides teachers the “why” to stay with it.

About This Cause

We impact the social-emotional health and the lives of LD students, their families, and teachers by organizing events and providing resources. Our events fall into the following categories: Student Workshops Through StandUpU we host student workshops for elementary and middle school students to support social and emotional learning (SEL); build confidence and develop self-advocacy skills. StandUp, Speak Out! Students learn about the historical significance of the soapbox, which is much like a stage and gives them a platform to speak out and share. The goal is to help students develop their own self-advocacy skills which help them succeed in both school and higher education. We believe when a student can “own” their learning disability then they can learn and advocate for themselves. The event culminates in each student creating an interactive art project about their personal story and sharing it with the group while standing on a soapbox. StandUp For Your Super Powers! Considerable research indicates the power of focusing on strengths vs. a focus on weaknesses. This is an especially important focus for those with LD. Too often their “weaknesses” are front and center while strengths remain cloaked in darkness. This workshop is designed to help students and parents identify strengths and self-advocate based on those strengths. StandUp, Break Through! This workshop builds on strengths to empower young people to create a vision for the future, set goals, and develop a plan for breaking through perceived barriers. Visioning is used by professional athletes, to high performing business executives as a tool to developing successful outcomes. We bring this methodology to students to help them with academic and life success. Inspirational Speakers Our inspirational speakers have lived with dyslexia, ADHD, and related learning differences. They share their journey, the struggles they have encountered and the insights they have learned along the way. These events are designed to inspire, motivate, and provide hope to students, parents, and educators. Round Tables These events, structured to foster conversation, allow parents to connect with local experts, resources, and assistive technologies. Assistive Technology Round Tables (for middle and high school students, parents and educators) Designed to provide information on using technology to address learning barriers encountered by those with LD, attendees rotate through tables representing the latest in technology and advocacy resources for students with learning differences. This is a unique opportunity to see technology demonstrated and to ask questions. Ask an Expert Round Tables (for parents and teachers) Representatives from local, state, and national organizations meet with parents to provide insight and resources. Information on audiobooks, navigating public schools, advocating resources, private school options, and accessing free federal programs are covered.
