PUERTO RICO INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, 20010-9022 United States

Mission Statement

The vision The Puerto Rico International Piano Festival to make Puerto Rico a center of classical piano excellence by fostering the education and artistic growth of young classical piano students. Puerto Piano is a classical piano festival that encompasses a week-long intensive program, in which students have an opportunity to share musical ideas, learn from our distinguished faculty, perform in public recitals, as well as explore all that Puerto Rico has to offer. In addition, by bringing professors and students from prestigious universities and music conservatories around the world to the island, we aim to stimulate and motivate the local talent of Puerto Rico. We hope that the Puerto Piano becomes an important stepping stone in the path of artistic growth of every participating young pianist.

About This Cause

Puerto Piano is a summer program attractive to students looking for opportunities to study abroad with internationally recognized pedagogues. We have had students from Germany, China, Brasil, Japan, Poland, Korea, and the United States and faculty members from prestigious institutions such as Manhattan School Of Music, New England Conservatory, New York University, and Catholic University. Our partnership with the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico allows festival participants students to have access to top-of-the-line facilities, in an all Steinway-piano school, and also to experience a culturally rich environment in a historic and cultural campus. During the festival week, students have an opportunity to participate in masterclasses, take private lessons, observe lessons of other participants, perform in recitals at the Conservatory and at other venues around the city, and be part of the audience of our internationally renowned concert series. The recital series has included the winners of the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition For Young Pianists, Victor Rosenbaum, Jorge Luis Prats, Adonis Gonzalez, and many more. At the end of the festival, students participate in a competition sponsored by the Steinway Society of Puerto Rico, in which the winner receives a cash award and an invitation to play a recital in San Juan the following year. Puerto Piano is able to offer four full and partial scholarships to students from the local, talented students. Scholarships are funded through the generosity of private donations, however our objective is to make attendance at our festival financially possible for many more students students who live in Puerto Rico and are engaged in serious musical studies. In partnership with the piano department at the Conservatory of Music, we hope that in future years more students will be involved either as participants or auditors. We also hope that in the future years we will be able to offer merit based scholarships to mainland and international students. Puerto Piano will not just benefit the students who participate ̶ it will equally benefit the general public. Our events are free of charge and we have received the support of the local media on WIPR 93.1, the San Juan Star newspaper, and on social media. Our public events are filled to capacity with a diverse audience including general public guests and local students.
