Painted Brain creates lasting community-based solutions to mental health challenges and the impact of social injustice through arts, advocacy and enterprise.
About This Cause
Mental illness is a social challenge. Art brings people together. Change begins with simple ideas. Painted Brain started with simple ideas, art groups and a magazine as methods to bring together a community of people facing mental health challenges that would not otherwise find each other. The social impact of mental illness is compounded by a mental health system that unintentionally isolates people in need of community support, exacerbating the crises of homelessness and incarceration. We need to devote ourselves to creative, community-based solutions beyond the mental health world, building allies in the arts and technology. For ten years running, Painted Brain’s thriving community has driven change among its contributors. We run a community center (which we are in the process of reopening), provide art group services to local mental health agencies, hospitals and treatment centers, offer a speakers bureau for high school, college and graduate school students, and have an extensive media presence online.
